Ubisoft's Far Cry 6 features some dangling story threads that could potentially be setting up the narrative for a Far Cry 7. When looking at video game sequels in general, developers usually follow a number of different paths to further expand on a beloved series. Properties like Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham trilogy or Naughty Dog's Uncharted games keep the same protagonist and core group of characters from the first game in subsequent entries, choosing to craft new adventures for the established cast in different locales. Franchises like Far Cry take another approach to sequels by delivering new casts of characters and stories for each game in the series that all fall within the same in-game universe.

Although Far Cry games tend to offer the same open-world gameplay from title to title, Ubisoft's decision to present players with a different story and new cast of characters keeps things feeling fresh. Even though all of the games seemingly share a universe with one another, only minor characters like Far Cry 3's Willis Huntley and Hurk Drubman Jr. tend to cross over into subsequent titles. None of the series' core villains have crossed over to other titles at this point outside of Easter eggs, and the games usually don't recycle locales that players have already explored once before, outside of Far Cry New Dawn's story taking place in Far Cry 5's Hope County, Montana.

Ubisoft may be shaking things up after Far Cry 6, which teases some elements in the endgame that could shape the direction that the developers are looking to take the seriesKeep in mind that a Far Cry 7 may be a good ways down the road, considering Far Cry 6 just released and still has a handful of post-launch DLC on the horizon that Ubisoft is focusing its attention on. It's still important to look at the plot threads established in the newest title and highlight some potential routes that the developer could explore in future titles, and this is how Far Cry 6 could be setting up the story for a Far Cry 7.

Ubisoft Could Bring Players Back To Yara For Far Cry 7

[Warning: Spoilers for Far Cry 6's Ending Below]

The story of Far Cry 6 ends with Dani Rojas finally confronting Anton Castillo after uniting all of the guerilla factions across Yara. Things take a unfortunate turn when Anton shoots his son Diego in the chest to protect him from imprisonment at the hands of the rebellion and follows up the murder by slitting his own throat and collapsing dead to the ground. The game ends with Dani burying the body of Diego with the help of their mentor Juan Cortez, with Yara standing on the precipice of even more violence without a leader.

Consider the potential repercussions that ending Far Cry 6 without establishing a new leader for Yara could have on the country. The guerilla factions that were once united by Dani Rojas to work against Anton Castillo could become hostile against one another in pursuit of leadership over their home country. The seeds have already been sewn for such a conflict at the end of Far Cry 6, with the guerillas arguing amongst themselves about who should assume leadership as soon as Anton and Diego are dead.

Far Cry 7 could explore this potential storyline by throwing players back into a Yara a few years into a period of civil war and asking them to save the country once again. The enemies this time around could be the factions of rebel fighters that once chose to fight against the rulers and senseless violence they now embody, with their fall from grace being an interesting dynamic for the developers to explore. In terms of a protagonist to center the story around, Ubisoft could choose to bring Dani back for another heroic mission after surviving the events of Far Cry 6, or create a completely different character that may have been affected by the brutal civil war that should have never happened. It's definitely not a stretch for the series to go the route of a civil war storyline, considering Far Cry 4's narrative was centered around Ajay Ghale ending the civil war in Kyrat against warlord Pagan Min.

Vaas Could Return As A Villain Once Again In Far Cry 7

Far Cry 6 May Include Vaas DLC

After the credits roll on Far Cry 6, fans receive some extra story content in the form of a conversation between Juan Cortez and a character identified as "Smuggler". The "Smuggler" in question should be recognized immediately by Far Cry fans as Vaas Montenegro, who served as one of the primary antagonists back in Far Cry 3. Juan and Vaas have a conversation about the final events of Far Cry 6's story, as well as establish the fact that Juan is supplying the unhinged villain with the cancer drug Viviro that Anton Castillo was hell-bent on growing in Yara.

Vaas' appearance at the end of Far Cry 6 is an unexpected surprise when remembering his supposed death in Far Cry 3, but the return of the character opens up a world of possibilities that Ubisoft could explore in a future Far Cry 7. The most logical option would be to throw Vaas back into a villainous role and pit players against his specific brand of insanity once again. His reputation as a "Smuggler" that he has established could be a front for more nefarious doings, and the pirate could be using his interactions with Juan Cortez and the Libertad to gather intel on the rebel forces before instituting a plan to take control of Yara himself.

In fact, Vaas’ appearance could be confirming the theory that Far Cry 6 is set in an alternate timeline from the rest of the games where some of the previous Far Cry villains are still alive. This theory is further backed up by Pagan Min’s appearance on magazine covers across Yara, who also supposedly died at the end of Far Cry 4. Ubisoft could lean fully into the more ridiculous aspects of the Far Cry games and play around with the concept of an alternate universe in a sequel by bringing back any number of former villains for players to face again. Nobody knows what Ubisoft could decide to do with a potential Far Cry 7, but Far Cry 6 sets up some intriguing possibilities for the series.
