Fantastic Four 2015 star Kate Mara discussed whether she'd continue returning for the MCU's reboot of the property. Fantastic Four - which follows the exploits of Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman The Human Torch, and The Thing - is a property that was adapted early on in the superhero movie boom of the 2000s. It was first brought to the big screen by Tim Story in 2005 with the lineup including Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis. That film did well, landing at #13 in the box office and earning a 2007 sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, but neither film was well-reviewed and the franchise faded away.

In 2015, Fantastic Four was resurrected by director Josh Trank, who had previously helmed the found-footage superhero flick Chronicle. This iteration starred Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell. The film, which suffered from a chaotic production that was denounced by Trank before it was even released was a rather spectacular failure. It received the worst Rotten Tomatoes score of the franchise, lost $80 million in the box office, and went on to earn the Worst Picture award at that year's Razzies. The planned Fantastic Four sequel was quickly scrapped and the team was shelved yet again.

Now, Marvel is planning a brand new reboot of Fantastic Four that will tie in with the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be directed by Jon Watts, who helmed Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, but no casting announcements have been made yet. While speaking with ComicBook.com, Kate Mara was asked if she would ever consider returning if she was asked. She joked about it, saying "who's directing?" and said she wouldn't mind. However, she admitted frankly that "I don't think anyone's calling to ask me to do that." Read the full quote below:

I'm like, "Who's directing?" Sadly, I don't think anyone's calling to ask me to do that, but, sure, in a fantasy world.

Since starring in Fantastic Four, Mara has retreated largely from blockbuster filmmaking. The actress did star in the 2017 wide release film Megan Leavey, about a marine's connection with her dog, but otherwise she has been focusing on roles in television. In addition to starring on the first season of FX's Pose, she starred alongside Love, Simon's Nick Robinson in the controversial Hulu series A Teacher in 2020.

While there is currently no news on the development of the MCU's Fantastic Four, it actually isn't entirely out of the question for Mara to have a part in it or the MCU at large. Considering the way that Spider-Man: No Way Home is bringing in characters from every previous universe, this is no longer unprecedented. Likewise, the MCU did cast previous Human Torch Chris Evans as Captain America, which also opens the door for Mara to potentially fill another role even if she doesn't play the Invisible Woman again.
