Newt Scamander's Patronus animal is a bigger spoiler for the future Fantastic Beasts films than some fans might think, which means that Eddie Redmayne's quirky magizoologist may have even more secrets and layers than were revealed in the first film. That's saying something too, since when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was released late last year, the best thing that the film did was introduce Harry Potter fans to a new group of characters that they could love and be willing to follow along with again in next year's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, and then three more subsequent films after that.

Right at the center of that new group was Redmayne as Newt, a character most Harry Potter fans knew only as the author of a famous book in the wizarding world, and the grandfather of Rolf Scamander, who went on to marry Luna Lovegood from the original Harry Potter series. But when he was introduced in Fantastic Beasts, he wound up being a powerful and complicated character in his own right, who even goes toe-to-toe with one of the most powerful dark wizards in the fictional world's history.

With the confirmation that Zoe Kravitz's Leta Lestrange would be appearing in the sequel (Newt's ex-girlfriend who left a noticeable mark on him), it was already clear that the future Fantastic Beasts films would be delving more into Newt's past moving forwards. But when asked on Twitter recently if it was a big spoiler to reveal what animal Newt's Patronus is, Harry Potter author and Fantastic Beasts screenwriter, J.K. Rowling replied that it was a 'big spoiler':

Big spoiler. https://t.co/kmwXNaOEtT— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) April 26, 2017

As Harry Potter fans know, the Patronus charm not only protects whoever conjures it from Dementors, but the animal form that it takes is often indicative of the wizard conjuring it. This device is even used to great emotional effects in the Potter books and films, most notably when it's revealed that Severus Snape's Patronus was a Silver Doe, the same as Lily Potter's, a literal representative of his undying love and devotion for her.

It's worth noting as well that Rowling doesn't exactly indicate when Newt's Patronus will be revealed - if it will be in Fantastic Beasts 2 or another one of the films, so it's entirely possible fans may not find out until the final Fantastic Beasts installment. But still, fans may want to watch out for any and all references to Patronus and animals in the meantime, if they still want to try and figure out just what exactly Newt's Patronus animal is. Luckily, Pottermore launched an official Patronus charm quiz last year, which lets users find out what their Patronus animal would be, and could be helpful in solving this particular mystery.
