Fantastic Beasts: How Credence's Mother Can Be Related To Voldemort

Warning: This article contains SPOIELRS for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

One of the biggest revelations in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is that Credence Barebone is Aurelius Dumbledore. Credence had been adopted as a child, and longed to discover his true identity. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, he thinks he's discovered it, but as it turns out, Credence isn't Corvus Lestrange as many people had thought. In an emotional confession, Leta Lestrange reveals that she had switched her baby brother, Corvus, with another child while on board a ship bound for America. The ship then sank, and she was left holding the baby who would grow up to become Credence. It's left to Grindelwald to tell Credence his alleged birth name; Aurelius Dumbledore.

If that is indeed correct, it implies that there is a long lost Dumbledore sibling in the Harry Potter timeline that fans know nothing about. Fans know that Albus, Aberforth and Ariana Dumbldore were raised together, and that Ariana became an obscurial after she was attacked, at age 6, by three Muggle boys. Percival Dumbledore retaliated and was sentenced to life in Azkaban as a result. Ariana was later killed by either Albus, Aberforth, or Grindelwald, when they were fighting and a stray curse hit her.

With Credence being significantly younger than the other three Dumbledore siblings, it raises the question of who his parents really are, and what other connections he has. Specifically, is Credence/Aurelius' birth mother also Voldemort's grandmother?

Credence's Father Is (Probably) Percival Dumbledore

Assuming Grindelwald is telling Credence the truth about his name being Aurelius Dumbledore, then it seems logical that he's one of Albus Dumbledore's siblings. Not only does his birth name start with an "A" like all Dumbledore siblings, but fans haven't heard of any extended family on Albus' side. In that case, it's likely that the family connection comes from Percival Dumbledore.

Kendra Dumbledore, mother of the other three Dumbledore siblings, was killed in 1899 by Ariana when she couldn't control her obscurus. Credence wasn't born until 1901, thereby ruling out Kendra as his mother. Meanwhile, Percival Dumbledore was serving life in Azkaban for attacking the three Muggle boys. He refused to reveal his motives for the attack, because as an obscurial, Ariana would have been locked away. If Credence is a Dumbledore sibling, then Percival must have somehow conceived him while in Azkaban - or perhaps there's something else afoot.

What We Know About Credence's Mother

Very little in known about Credence Barebone's mother or his birth; in fact, uncovering the secrets of Credence's true identity is at the heart of the Fantastic Beasts series. It's stated that Credence was born in 1901. That would tie in with Leta Lestrange being around the age of 6 or 7 when she swapped the babies, and would make him about 26 years old during the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

If Credence was, in fact, conceived in Azkaban (which itself is quite confounding as to how that's possible), then that means his mother was most likely sentenced there as well, which would make her a witch. Again, that ties in with Colin Farrell's Grindelwald (who was Grindelwald impersonating Percival Graves) telling Credence he's of magical blood. For his mother to be Voldemort's grandmother, that also means she must have had a second child; Merope Gaunt, born 1907.
