Few film franchises have been able to create and sustain the international appeal that J.K. Rowling’s world of Harry Potter has. As a matter of fact, throughout the years, the phenomenon that is Harry Potter has only managed to grow – from a series of highly success novels, to a film series of monstrous proportions and now on to a prequel franchise whose potential for growth is already looming large.
The upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been chugging along for quite some time now, gradually building excitement and hype, but only within the past few weeks – and particularly since the release of the film’s latest (and final) trailer before its November theatrical release – have things really begun to reach a buzz of tremendous proportions. It seems that for some, the response from this summer’s script book, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, has perhaps emboldened hopes that Fantastic Beasts will deliver something special.
In the aftermath of the final Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer last week, social media buzz has reached such a degree that Variety is now reporting more than 62,000 new conversations about the film being initiated. That statistic was compiled by media-measurement firm comScore and serves to reveal that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has secured its place as the most talked about film on social media throughout the past week.
With such a boost of hype and discussion following in the wake of the final Fantastic Beasts trailer, Warner Bros. is undoubtedly looking to draw in big numbers when the film opens in a little over a month’s time. Aside from Fantastic Beasts, November has some other potential big hitters lined up for release as well, including Doctor Strange, Trolls, Bad Santa 2 and Moana. However, despite Fantastic Beasts only being tangentially tied to Harry Potter, Rowling’s world of wizardry has a wide and entrenched fanbase – the likes of which won’t be easily knocked from a top spot at the box office.
Production has yet to begin on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, but with that film having already been announced and Rowling already finished up work on the screenplay, the confidence Warner Bros. has displayed thus far is high. Considering that the last Harry Potter film brought in a handsome sum at the box office, there’s ample reason to believe that Fantastic Beasts will be a hit. But simply because there has been much talk about the film online over the past week does not necessarily mean that all those conversations have been positive. As is to be expected, the film has already had its share of detractors.
Regardless, Rowling’s charming world of wizards and bizarre creatures has a lock on a certain segment of the movie-going population. With those sorts of numbers set to head to theaters once Fantastic Beasts arrives, Warner Bros. will still manage to come away with decent box office numbers, whether the film is a certified hit or not. The safest overall bet in this situation however, is very likely on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them conjuring up its very own brand of endearing magic upon release.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released November 18, 2016
