Star Dan Fogler has proposed a theory about Hagrid's appearance in the untitled Fantastic Beasts 3 movie. The Fantastic Beasts films serve as a prequel/ spin-off series to the Harry Potter movies within the Wizarding World universe. The film franchise kicked off in 2016 when J.K. Rowling rendered her 2001 guidebook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into an eponymous Harry Potter prequel. The movie itself was a hit, but its 2018 sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald failed to warrant critical and commercial success. The third Fantastic Beasts movie is now primed to debut in November 2021, and speculation is rife that it will add several characters from the original Harry Potter series in order to redeem its reputation after the recent failure.
The first two Fantastic Beasts films had offered a look at some of the Harry Potter-verse's most memorable characters. The Crimes of Grindelwald, for instance, showcased the early years of Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) at Hogwarts, while Minerva McGonagall (Fiona Glascott) also appeared in a rather perplexing cameo. The third Fantastic Beasts movie has also been rumored to reintroduce original Harry Potter characters. Eddie Redmayne, who stars as Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts series, first voiced hopes about the return of Rubeus Hagrid in a Reddit AMA last year, and his suggestion has since gained traction with fans. Reports also suggest a young version of Tom Riddle—who later becomes Lord Voldemort—might have a role in the new film. Hagrid and Riddle's roles are, however, not yet confirmed. But Dan Fogler's new theory may actually get one Harry Potter character to appear in the Fantastic Beasts series.
According to Fogler's interview with The Movie Dweeb, Hagrid can crossover with the Fantastic Beasts universe through a "fun connection" with the star's own character, muggle Jacob Kowalski. In Fogler's theory, Hagrid's giantess mother Fridwulfa first goes to Newt, a magizoologist, requesting him to take care of her child. But Newt declines Fridwulfa's request, which forces her to turn to Fogler's Kowalski for help. Kowalski subsequently agrees to Fridwulfa's plea and takes Hagrid into foster care, raising him to become the iconic Hogwarts gamekeeper.
In the interview, Fogler also theorized about the appearance of other Harry Potter characters in Fantastic Beasts 3. The previous Fantastic Beasts movies have already depicted Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry's professors in their prime. So it will not be surprising if the institution's other staff members or even its future students appear in the forthcoming Fantastic Beasts movies. One way for that to happen is time-travel, a surreal magic skill that has already been deployed in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Fogler believes that "With the whole Time-Turner thing, you could really have anybody show up." Hermione, for instance, could end up in the 1930s "by accident or something."
Hagrid, given his love for magical creatures, is best suited for the Fantastic Beasts films. But Robbie Coltrane's version of the character doesn't fit into the series' chronology. Fogler's hypothesis, however, provides a logical roadmap for Hagrid's incorporation in Fantastic Beasts. Since Fantastic Beasts 3 is reportedly set in the 1930s, which is after Hagrid's birth, the film can delve into the childhood of the fan-beloved behemoth without engendering any plotholes. In fact, with Fogler's theory, Coltrane can also reprise his original character, although that would require some good old Harry Potter wizardry. If Fantastic Beasts 3 utilizes time-travel Robbie Coltrane's heartwarming character will be able to co-exist in multiple timelines within the same universe. And that way, fans will be able to witness their favorite half-giant once again on the screen.
