New information regarding the plot of the yet-to-be-titled Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2 which has recently started production in the United Kingdom. The Harry Potter prequel off-shoot follows new protagonist, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) - a British magizoolist who totes around with his briefcase full of magical creatures.
Following the massive success of the kick starter from the planned five-film series, Fantastic Beasts 2 is upping the ante by taking its narrative from the streets of New York to U.K and Paris. The story will pick up just months after the events of the original Fantastic Beasts with Jude Law set to debut as young Albus Dumbledore. The future Hogwarts headmaster has already been referenced in the first film as Newt's former professor. He is expected to team up with the magizoolist in order to take down Johnny Depp's evil wizard, Gellert Grindelwald.
In a new report by Deadline, Fantastic Beasts 2's production has already hit the ground running with principal photography currently taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden which is earlier than the supposed August start. The sequel is being directed by Harry Potter veteran David Yates who also helmed the first film in the prequel spin-off. J.K. Rowling has also penned the script after her successful debut in the original Fantastic Beasts film.
The article also provided a plot description which you can read below:
“As he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause — elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol) and Jacob (Dan Fogler), but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”
It would be curious to see Dumbledore in his youth as a Transfiguration professor in Hogwarts. The original Harry Potter series (for the most part) always depicted him as the wise mentor to Harry and it seems like he also extended the same affinity to Newt. His complex relationship with Grindelwald is also expected to be further explored. Judging by the timeline, the two's friendship has already fallen apart following the supposed duel that caused Dumbledore's sister, Ariana's death. But don't expect that their existing conflict will be resolved in the follow-up. Harry Potter canon says that Grindelwald was defeated in 1945 and the upcoming sequel is still set in the late 1920s which means that Depp can still return in the next movie installments.
It would also be interesting how Rowling will flesh out her earlier ideas of Dumbledore being in love with his former friend, turned nemesis in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2 as she has hinted that the sequel will explore the fan-favorite character's sexuality. The writer has previously said that she always thought that the powerful wizard as homosexual and Grindelwald his "great tragedy."
