Fantastic Beasts 2 Photo Offers First Look At Young Newt

A new photo released from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald shows a young Newt Scamander as a student at Hogwarts under the tutelage of Professor Albus Dumbledore. The photo comes from a flashback scene that shows Newt as a young wizard at the school before his expulsion.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald picks up after the events of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. In the new film, Professor Dumbledore calls on Newt to help him defeat the evil Grindelwald, who wants to raise up pureblood witches and wizards to rule over all of humanity. Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt with a cast that includes Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. Although the film is set in the world of Harry Potter, it acts as a prequel to that series of books by J.K. Rowling, alluding to events previously mentioned in that franchise.

EW released a new photo from the movie, which shows a young Newt taking a lesson at Hogwarts from Professor Dumbledore. This is also the youngest version of Dumbledore seen to date. This scene is a flashback that shows a time before Hogwarts expelled Newt, presumably for something to do with the fantastic creatures he was always so fascinated with.

Although Grindelwald, as portrayed by Depp, is the main villain of the movie, the trailer barely shows him. At first, Depp's casting in the role was kept secret, revealed shortly before the first film released then confirmed by a brief appearance in Fantastic Beasts. Some might surmise this has something to do with the controversy surrounding the casting of Deep, particularly after the allegations against him for domestic violence. In the end, Rowling defended his involvement with the film. It seems that the movie revolves around Grindelwald's recruitment of dark wizards to join him in his evil quest, so it's still likely that his role is larger than the trailer might have fans believe.

David Heyman, the producer of Fantastic Beasts 2, promises the new film will be even better than the previous one. The story will take place across many countries and settings. He believes that the direction by David Yates in the sequel is more cinematic and dynamic than that of the previous film. The movie also introduces a wide variety of new characters to the Fantastic Beasts universe.

Considering the success of the first movie, it's probably safe to bet that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will pack theaters when it releases in November. Until then, fans can wait patiently and continue to debate if Ilvermorny is a better school than Hogwarts.
