A LEGO set may have just revealed an important battle in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, including how the Dark Wizard escapes MACUSA. The first trailer for the upcoming sequel to Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was released earlier this week, and gave fans a good look at Jude Law as the young Professor Dumbledore, as well as a lot of footage of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) back in action as he travels to Paris and meets up with Dumbledore.
There were also several quick shots of other characters, as well as a single shot of the eponymous Dark Wizard, Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). In this shot, Depp looks significantly more downtrodden than he did at the end of the original Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and is in the back of a carriage with two wands pointed at him. The carriage itself is being pulled by thestrals, and is clearly important - as it is the focus of a LEGO set that reveals how Grindelwald will escape!
The LEGO set was revealed by Nerdist, and includes a black carriage with removable roof and working doors, and a thestral with poseable wings. In addition, the set comes with figures of Grindelwald and MACUSA President Serafina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo), with wands and spell accessories. The set consists of 132 pieces, and is called 'Grindelwald's Escape'.
The name of the set makes it clear that Grindelwald escapes from within the carriage, presumably when he is being transported by MACUSA. In the trailer, we can see that the carraige drivers are wearing black masks, but that inside the carriage, Grindelwald is being held at wand-point by at least two wizards. Two more wizards on broomsticks are following the carriage. This suggests that MACUSA will intentionally have Grindelwald in the carriage ready to be sent to Azkaban (or an equivalent prison), but that his men will take over the carriage, and lead to a chase and presumably mid-air battle from which Grindelwald escapes, and that Serafina is involved in.
It's no secret that the captured Grindelwald will escape the custody of MACUSA in the film, of course, as he needs to be free in order to reunite with his old friend (turned enemy) Dumbledore, so that the two powerful wizards can have their legendary duel. The mode of escape is interesting, though, and it looks like this is going to be an epic escape scene for fans to enjoy. Some are worried, however, that the lack of Serafina scenes in the trailer and the fact that she will be battling Grindelwald in the escape may mean that the President of MACUSA doesn't survive this encounter...
