The upcoming sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald gets a pair of new images that feature Tina and Newt looking like they’re up to no good, and one of Grindelwald, who is definitely up to no good. The images are the latest from the upcoming Harry Potter prequel to emerge after the official title was announced along with a cast photo last month. That image featured the first look at Jude Law as the Young Dumbledore, but it also spurred discussion regarding the decision to keep Johnny Depp in the role of Grindelwald following allegations of domestic abuse. The discussion grew to the point that even J.K. Rowling and the film’s director David Yates added their two cents.
Since then, information from The Crimes of Grindelwald has been on a steady drip, with details about the film’s Paris setting, the decision behind casting Law in the role of Albus Dumbledore, and news that the film has completed filming arriving in what seemed like rapid succession. Despite that most recent news, it seems that, for the time being, fans will have to be satisfied with the intermittent release of still images until the inevitable first trailer pops up.
Keeping fans satisfied might be tricky, as it appears the images from the film are content revealing next to nothing — well, other than Newt Scamander in familiar company. First there was the shot of Newt hanging out with Albus, who had donned a snazzy bowler hat for the occasion. Then came the image of Newt with his friend Jacob Kowalski, a reunion that is sure to have fans speculating considering Jacob’s fate in the first film. Today, however, Empire has revealed a shot of Newt and Tina together, looking over their shoulders and as though they’re up to no good.
In addition to Newt and Tina, USA Today got ahold of a brand new shot of Grindelwald and one of his followers, Rosier (Poppy Corby-Tuech), as they stand in the street and look ominously off into the distance. As with the images that have come before, eager fans don’t have a lot to go on here.
Though anticipation for the film hasn’t reached the same levels that would accompany the arrival of a new Harry Potter film, The Crimes of Grindelwald is still one of the biggest films of 2018. It has a lot to live up to, though (and to live down, it seems). The first Fantastic Beasts film took in over $800 million worldwide and earned generally positive reviews despite a distinct lack of the boy who lived and his nemesis who shall not be named. As such, we’ll have to wait until November of 2018 to find out if fans are as excited for more Newt, Tina, and the Young Dumbledore as they were for Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
