Jude Law Knows Dumbledore's Entire Backstory

Fantastic Beasts Jude Law Dumbledore

Jude Law revealed he learned Albus Dumbledore's entire backstory in preparation for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The sequel to 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released in theaters this November starring Eddie Redmayne reprising his role as the famed Magizoologist, Newt Scamander. The film also has a massive supporting cast including Alison Sudol, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Ingvar Sigurdsson, Johnny Depp, Katherine Waterston, Kevin Guthrie, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, William Nadylam, Zoë Kravitz and Law as a young Dumbledore.

The film is almost entirely set in Paris in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). When Grindelwald escapes, like he promised he would, he begins to gather followers for his cause - elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who can help defeat the Dark wizard, is his former friend Albus Dumbledore, who recruits help from Newt, Tina (Waterston), Queenie (Sudol) and Jacob (Fogler) to stop Grindelwald in the increasingly dividing wizarding world.

A new interview on the Golden Globes red carpet last night with ET reveals that The Young Pope star lived every Harry Potter fan's dream and had a "magical" afternoon with writer J.K. Rowling to prepare for the role. Here is what he said:

“Do you know what I did? I sat in a room for an afternoon with J.K. Rowling, and I listened to her extraordinary words of wisdom. She was kind enough to share with me the whole backstory and her future hopes for this young character of Dumbledore and really that set me on the path. I just did what the writer said.”

Law also revealed that he's excited to see his character go up against Depp's in the upcoming film, but he commented that he “can't say much” about the plot, which is not surprising considering the film doesn't come out until later this year. So far, we have photos of young Dumbledore hanging out with Newt on set, which is quite jarring considering we first met a very aged version of Dumbledore in the original Harry Potter films during the early 2000s played by Richard Harris, and later Michael Gambon.

It is also going to be interesting to finally learn more backstory about the iconic character. Interestingly enough, Rowling once said in a 2007 interview that she always thought of Dumbledore as gay and that he had fallen in love with Gellert Grindelwald. This love turned out to be Dumbledore's "great tragedy" as Grindelwald leaned towards the dark side of magic while Dumbledore stayed in the light, severing their deep bond.

While we don't know if Dumbledore will be openly gay in the film, we have no doubt that Law will deliver a stellar performance as he usually does.
