Fantastic Beasts 2 Casts Callum Turner as Newt's Brother

The cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 expands with the addition of Callum Turner (Green Room) as Newt Scamander's brother.

The Wizarding World expands yet again with the casting of Callum Turner. Following on from the success of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, filming is set to begin this summer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, the second of five movies following the rise of the dark wizard, Grindelwald.

So far, not much is known about the plot of Fantastic Beasts 2, other than it will continue the storyline that started in the first movie; where Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA with the help of Newt Scamander. Many cast will be returning for the sequel, including Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, and Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. Following on from the casting of Jude Law as Dumbledore, comes another announcement; with Turner joining the cast as Newt Scamander's brother.

Variety is reporting that Turner will play Newt's sibling - who, according to Harry Potter Wiki, is named Thesus, and is older than Newt. He worked as an Auror, and is described as a very powerful wizard. He is said to have communicated with Percival Graves regarding the capture of Grindelwald, and informs Newt that he has been assigned to help capture the dark wizard. It is said that Thesus doesn't approve of Newt's career as a Magizoologist, but it does appear that the pair have a relatively close relationship.

Turner has appeared in movies such as Green Room, Victor Frankenstein, and Assassin's Creed, but may be best known by some for hie role in the BBC adaptation of War and Peace.  He is also set to play opposite Jeff Bridges in The Only Living Boy in New York, which is set to open this summer. Fantastic Beasts 2 will certainly propel him to stardom, since Turner will be joining a franchise with one of the most fervent fandoms to ever exist.

With J.K. Rowling writing the script for Fantastic Beasts 2, there is no need to assume that Turner's character won't follow the description above. In which case, we can expect his role to be fairly substantial, since Thesus is directly involved with trying to capture Grindelwald. That also means we could expect to see him sharing some scenes with Law, since Dumbledore made it  his own personal mission to try and stop his former friend from terrorizing Europe.

Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts 2 will be set at least partly in Paris, and will also expand upon other plotlines from the first movie. Zoe Kravitz will return as Leta Lestrange, and her part will be much more substantial than it was. There's also the (unconfirmed) real possibility that Ezra Miller will be back as the deeply-troubled Credence Barebone; when MACUSA tried to destroy his obscurus, part of it escaped, and a deleted scene showed Credence boarding a boat to leave the U.S. With filming soon set to begin, and casting announcements starting to emerge, we can expect to hear a lot more about Fantastic Beasts 2 in due course.
