Dune has quickly become one of the most anticipated upcoming movies. With plenty of talent and a beloved source material already behind it, there were plenty of fans looking forward to this big screen adaptation. However, with big names being announced to the cast seeming every day, excitement for the film has skyrocketed.

The film will follow Frank Herbert’s novel which is packed with so many interesting worlds, characters, and plots. As details slowly begin to come in, we can start to get excited about what we’ll see as well as what we hope we’ll see. Here’s what we know and what we’re hoping for from the new Dune film.

Know: Denis Villeneuve Is The Director

Denis Villeneuve Arrival

Dune is a difficult project for any director to undertake. But when it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would helm the project, many fans were happy to see it was in such good hands. Villeneuve had already tackled a difficult sci-fi film (Arrival) as well as revive a beloved sci-f property (Blade Runner 2049), so he seemed like a perfect choice.

Villeneuve had been hoping for the chance to make his own Dune film for years now. Despite the enormous size of the project, he looks at this as a passion project. With his distinct filmmaking style and impressive filmography, we can’t wait to see what he has planned.

Know: Timothee Chalamet

The leading role for this big-budget epic was likely one sought by every young actor in Hollywood. It only makes sense that it would go to one of Hollywood’s most popular young actors, Timothee Chalamet.

Chalamet became a star and Oscar nominee with his role in Call Me By Your Name, and has recently received acclaim for his performance in Beautiful Boy. Likewise, Chalamet is the first actor announced for the massive cast. He will play, Paul Atreides, the son of a powerful family and hero of the story. With Chalamet’s name attached, we’re likely to see some young movie-goers take interest.

Know: Zendaya

For the female lead of the film, filmmakers found another popular up-and-coming actor to join the cast. Zendaya has been tapped for the role of Chani, a mysterious girl who holds a special connection with Paul. Chani and Paul eventually form a romantic relationship over the course of the story.

Zendaya started out as a Disney Channel actress before landing the role of MJ in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She has since appeared in The Greatest Showman and will reprise her role in this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Hope: More Sandworms

A sandworm in Dune concept art

Probably the image most associated with Dune is gigantic sandworms emerging from the desert. In the mythology of this world, the massive sandworms live in the desert of the planet Arrakis. They make harvesting the planets resource, Spice, very dangerous as they attack based on vibrations.

David Lynch’s film featured the creatures heavily but failed to give much insight into the beasts. The source material provides more, so hopefully, the film will explore that as well. It would also be thrilling if Villeneuve made them truly terrorizing and helped create a new iconic movie monster.

Know: Supporting Cast

With two solid young actors leading this film, excitement is already high. But they weren’t ready to stop there. The filmmakers seem deadest on including every working actor in this film.

Among those who are already confirmed for this film include Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson who will be playing Paul’s parents. Isaac is no stranger to sci-fi thanks to his role as Poe Dameron in Star Warsand Ferguson is becoming a genre favorite thanks to her role in the Mission: Impossible films. Joining these two excellent actors are Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem to name but a few.

Know: Villains

With such an impressive cast making up the heroes of the film, it will need an equally impressive group of actors to play the villains. In the novels, the enemy of House Atreides and their allies is House Harkonnen, who wish to seize power from their rivals.

Stellan Skarsgård will lead this faction as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, an obese and grotesque madman. Joining him is Dave Bautista as Glossu "Beast" Rabban and David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries. All three actors have shown their skills for playing baddies and they should provide a solid threat for the heroes.

Hope: Practical

Arrakeen Dune

The world of Dune is a complicated one to bring to life. With various planets, space travel and war, visual effects will be needed to achieve much of it. However, it would be nice if the filmmakers did as many practical effects as possible.

While visual effects can achieve extraordinary things, it’s hard to beat real life sets and practical character designs. They help to bring these worlds to life. Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 was an excellent combination of the two so here’s hoping he uses the same technique this time around.

Know: Release Date

Denis Villeneuve Dune Remake Legendary

Seeing as the film is still in the early stages of casting, it’s quite apparent we won’t be seeing it hit the big screen for some time. However, unsurprisingly with a movie of this size, the studio has already set a release date.

Dune will hit theaters on November 20, 2020. This suggests that Warner Bros. has a lot of confidence in this film, especially at it seems to be replacing Fantastic Beasts 3 in their release schedule. It might be a long wait for fans, but at least we can now mark it in our calendars.

Know: More Films To Come

Dune Reverend Mother Mohiam

Despite being a sci-fi adventure novel, Dune is not a quick read. There’s a lot in the story to unpack, making it a difficult novel to make into a film. David Lynch’s version was forced to cut a lot and insert awkward narration for clarification. Luckily, Villeneuve will have a bit more room to maneuver.

It has been announced that this film will cover approximately the first half of the book while Villeneuve has plans for one or two sequels. No official word has been given, but as the massive cast suggests, Warner Bros could be hoping for another franchise.

Hope: Epic Battles

Dune Sting Patrick Stewart Kyle MacLachlan

The novel of Dune is said to be one of the biggest inspirations for George Lucas when creating Star Wars. Villeneuve himself has said that his film will be like Star Wars for adults. The source material certainly has enough action and adventure to please sci-fi fans.

Unfortunately, due to budget or troubled production, we never did get to see the epic scope of this tale in Lynch’s version. The final battle, which had so much potential, was quite dull and anticlimactic. Hopefully, Villeneuve will deliver on some of those bigger set-pieces that could be spectacular on the big screen.
