One of the greatest things about fan culture is its ability to mix and merge popular properties. It’s not enough for fans to just write fan fiction, draw fan art, or cosplay as their favorite characters - they need to break the boundaries between their favorite characters and sometimes mash them together. And it’s in this spirit that Sailor Moon got to become her own version of Captain Marvel.

The MCU version of Valkyrie also gets the Sailor Scout treatment. Portrayed by actress Tessa Thompson. Valkyrie’s character broke ground when Thompson revealed her character was bisexual, a trait which may be explored in future MCU films featuring Valkyrie and that seems to be at play in the relationship suggested by the costumes chosen for the fan art.

Drawn by DeviantArt artist briannacherrygarcia, the fan art piece “Sailor Marvel and Tuxedo Valkyrie” shows everyone’s favorite Sailor Scout Usagi Tsukino (aka “Serena”) decked out in a Sailor Moon-style Captain Marvel outfit. And she’s not alone – as the title implies, the Sailor Moon fan art also features a gender-swapped version of Tuxedo Mask as Valkyrie from MCU’s Thor: Ragnarok.

In the fan art, Valkyrie is dressed in a version of the tuxedo worn by Sailor Moon’s romantic interest Tuxedo Mask. While the manga version of the character dresses in a black suit, “Tuxedo Valkyrie” dresses in a white tuxedo complete with a flowing blue cape to reflect the Valkyrie colors she wore in Thor: Ragnarok.

Sailor Moon, meanwhile, wears her traditional school girl Sailor Scout outfit – albeit one that reflects Captain Marvel’s blue-red-gold colors. Her chest, belt, and wand also sport versions of Carol Danvers’ star-shaped insignia, while her hair is also shorter and reflects Carol’s hairstyle in the original Captain Marvel movie. In the description, briannacherrygarcia mentions that she heard Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson loves Sailor Moon, prompting the unique piece.

The popularity of Sailor Moon has inspired mainstream DC artists to include her image in actual comic books, including one that merges her with a Harley Quinn cosplay and even one where Martian Manhunter takes on the appearance of Sailor Moon's fellow Sailor Scout “Sailor Mars” (for obvious reasons). In the case of fan art, however, Sailor Moon depictions continue to push the boundaries of what was once thought possible in pop culture. In this case, “Sailor Marvel and Tuxedo Valkyrie” functions not only as a fun cosplay for Captain Marvel and Valkyrie but a celebration of how the two women broke ground in their own respective MCU movies, while also seeming to reference fan calls for Carol Danvers to be portrayed as an LGBTQ character. It’s a cool piece for Sailor Moon fans that also functions on multiple other levels.
