Over the 18 seasons of Family Guyno character has been as mistreated as Meg Griffin. She is ostracized by her peers at school, abused by her family - especially Peter, and made her the butt of everyone's jokes. Everyone also seems to treat her as a punching bag, which is why it's not surprising that she has serious mental health issues.

So it's not exactly hard to empathize with her character. However, there are often moments where fans can understand the town's resentment of her. Particularly when she would let herself down by doing something immoral or irrational. Take a look at these examples if you don't believe it - for every moment one feels empathy, another moment full of hate follows.

Sympathetic: Her Toys Run Away

Meg might not be the easiest person to get along with, but fans couldn't help but feel a little sympathetic towards the teen girl when she was seen having a 'sleepover' with her stuffed animals. However, the sketch became even crueler when her toys decided to escape through the window and run away.

What's even worse is the Sunshine bear decides a life with Meg was too hard to contemplate and ends up jumping in front of a van to get away from her. Considering she was only going to show her ballet recital, she couldn't have been that bad.

Hated: Jealousy Over Neil's Girlfriend

For 18 years, fans have seen Meg complain about the unrequited crush Neil Goldman. However, when it appeared that Neil had got himself a new girlfriend, Meg didn't like it. In fact, the teen girl decided that she would try to make him jealous by getting herself a boyfriend.

While her plan worked and they dated for a few weeks, Meg got fed up with the Goldmans unfair treatment of her and broke up with him again. When Neil reconciled with his ex-girlfriend, Meg was seen to get jealous again. It seemed she just wanted Neil so no one else could have him.

While Meg had been wrong for trying to make Neil jealous but the viewers couldn't help but feel sympathetic towards the teen when they witnessed how her peers treated her. For instance, when Meg asked one of her woodwork classmates if he would pretend to go out with her, he says he couldn't because he was going to be in the hospital.

He then shoots himself in the stomach with a nail gun. Considering Neil was meant to worship the ground she walked, he even mistreated her and said she had to 'fulfill her contractual obligations.' They could be so cruel and horrible.

Hated: Said Peter Abused Her As A Joke

Everyone knows that Peter and Meg don't have the easiest of relationships, especially since the Griffin patriarch is always abusing her. However, there have been several occasions where Meg could be just as cruel and harsh as Peter. An example of this being in the episode "Big Man on Hippocampus" when Peter loses his memory.

As Peter is trying to become reacquainted with his bachelor lifestyle, Lois has to tell him that he cannot have any sexual relations with his children. This leads Meg to joke that maybe they should have told him this before he lost his memory. Unsurprisingly, the family is outraged - especially when they were already dealing with a sensitive situation.

Sympathetic: Peter Ditches Her For Connie

Peter has done some cruel things to Meg in his time but one of the worst had to be when he ditched Meg for her rival. As fans remember, Peter went undercover at James Woods High when he and Lois discover a drug outbreak occurring on campus. Here, Peter creates the persona, Lando Griffin, a popular and anti-drug student.

Since Peter becomes a hit with the students, he agrees to take Meg to the Winter Snow Ball to boost her popularity. However, he soon reneges on this promise to take her rival, Connie, as his date instead. It's no wonder she felt so betrayed.

Hated: Beating The Family Up After Prison

In season 8, Meg is forced to serve a couple of months in prison after she was found guilty of harboring a fugitive. However, when she comes home, the Griffins find that she has drastically changed. First, she beats up Peter and declares herself the new authoritative figure.

She then assaults him in the shower and disrespects Lois by using her shirts as toilet paper. Meg even orders Peter to punch Stewie in the face. Although the audience tended to sympathize with Meg, it was hard to at this moment.

In season 18, the viewers saw Meg try to start a new life after she got ditched by the family after they forgot her birthday. The plan is easily executed as Meg realized the Griffins believe her to be dead. However, she soon got tired of the lies and decides to come home.

Problem is, Chris doesn't want her to return since he has accrued newfound popularity. As a result, he kidnaps her and keeps her tied up in a warehouse. When she does make it out and exposes Chris, no one seems to care apart from Lois and Brian. So it's not surprising that she is depressed.

Hated: Meg's Obsession With Brian

Another storyline where fans detested Meg's character had to be when she became obsessed with Brian. After Brian takes Meg to prom, the teenager goes full-on bunny boiler and keeps telling everyone Brian is her boyfriend. When he insists that he isn't, Meg kidnaps him and sexually assaults him.

It's one of those instances where fans understood why people felt uncomfortable around her. Why she thought feeding him a pie containing her hair was normal was anyone's guess...

Sympathetic: Death of Chad

In the season 18 premiere, fans were delighted for Meg when she was seen to hit it off with a young boat employee. However, her new romance was short-lived when Peter causes the boat to flip over which results in Meg's new boyfriend being killed.

When she reconvenes with her family, she is seen dragging his dead body around. Although it's quite disturbing, fans did feel sympathy for the teen since this was the first guy she had a genuine connection to.

Hated: Apologizing For Standing Up For Herself

There was one moment fans couldn't help but hate Meg and that was her apologizing for sticking up for herself. Fans across the world cheered when Meg decided to confront her family after they make one too many jabs about her. She delivers some well-deserved home truths and tells them that she might leave them once she turns 18.

However, moments later, Meg backtracks and apologizes for her actions because she believes she is "a lightning rod that helps absorb the family's dysfunction." For something they have been waiting years for, fans resented Meg for taking this moment away.
