It’s not hard to spot problematic or deplorable characters on Family Guy. Almost everyone on the animated comedy is deeply flawed and has made some really terrifying decisions that may even be criminal in nature. But, for Seth MacFarlane, that’s just another productive writing session. The show, which has been renewed for its eighteenth season, has turned into a shock factory, and fans have had some mixed reactions, especially considering the cultural climate we’re in.

But, who’s the most hated character on the show? Is it the seriously creepy pedophile Herbert? Or is it the poster boy for toxic manhood Quagmire? Or is it Peter Griffin, who’s just a really bad and irresponsible father? This ranking should help fans answer the question

Carter Pewterschmidt

Carter is Lois’ superbly wealthy dad who’s not just racist and homophobic, but also quite sadistic. He absolutely loathes Peter, and, in fact, the show reveals that, in the late nineteenth century, Peter’s ancestor owned Peter’s black ancestor as a slave. But, fans have really hated how bitter and stubborn Carter is, even towards his own daughter, and how he always prioritizes money. He’s also not a good husband since he cheats on his wife and is obviously not a great father either.

Dr. Elmer Hartman

Elmer Hartman Family Guy

Dr. Hartman is easily the most frustrating and scary doctor anyone could ever have; not only is he incredibly incompetent, but he was even voted to be the worst doctor in his hospital.

Not only does he use misleading words to tell his patients about their diagnosis, which makes them panicky, but he even admitted to using WebMD to confirm his diagnosis, which is really unsettling. In fact, he even leaves his phone in Joe’s back, which causes him to become quadriplegic.

Bonnie Swanson

Joe and Bonnie in Family Guy

Bonnie didn’t exactly start out as an annoying character and didn’t have much to do in the first few seasons. But, the makers probably thought they could play up the darker shades in her character and made her unfaithful to Joe.

What’s really weird is that she goes on to have affairs with many men with Joe’s consent, which is apparently their arrangement because Joe is paralyzed. This was not just problematic, but it also creeped fans out that Bonnie would date people that Joe actually knew.

Loretta Brown

Loretta Quagmire Family Guy

Though fans think Loretta has been depicted pretty unfairly on the show, she did have some rather sketchy traits. Though she’s entitled to make her decisions, the fact that she left Cleveland because he had no personality did not sit well with the viewers.

Also, her really creepy relationship with Quagmire is something that fans have really hated. What’s worse, she tried to get back together with Cleveland after breaking his heart, but, thankfully, Cleveland had the courage to say no.

Chris Griffin

Chris in Family Guy

Family Guy has been on for years now, but fans are still struggling to understand what exactly Chris’s personality is. Is he spoiled? Is he insecure? Is he kind? His character is so haywire that it’s impossible for the fans to know what kind of a person he really is, but the one thing that they do know is that Chris is an enabler of problematic behavior, and does not make an effort to shield his siblings from crises. Plus, he’s also really, really boring to watch most of the time.

Brian

In spite of being quite spiteful, Brian is easily one of the most intriguing characters on the show. Firstly, his role has introduced a different approach to the talking pet prototype because Brian is definitely not just a secondary character or an occasional commentator.

Brian starts off as someone who’s actually saner and better adjusted than the people in his family but turns into a despicable, deceitful, and manipulative person. Not to mention, his whole affair with Lois was really creepy and actually turned a lot of Brian loyalists into haters.

Lois

Lois in Family Guy

To be fair, animation wives are always designed to fit the patient, giving homemaker stereotypes and are given very little range—except, of course, Marge Simpson. Why should Lois alone have to be the good parent? So, fans were actually happy when Lois began to go a bit rouge from the boring, goody-two-shoes housewife memo.

But, she actually transformed into someone really, really irresponsible. Not only she joined Peter in bullying Meg, but she also drugged her child, and that's not to mention the fact that she could be a really reckless parent and made some really bad decisions on the home front.

Peter

Peter had been designed as someone who’s deplorable and really hopeless, and fans have never really seen him as the level-headed one. But, he grew more and more disturbing as the show progressed, and fans noticed sometimes he would do things that are quite inconsistent with the character that had been established by the show.

It’s possible that makers try to opt for the Homer Simpson formula and planned to fine-tune the crazier parts, but Homer’s character is rooted to his duty towards his family. So, Peter is in many ways the anti-Homer. Peter became a really tone-deaf character that shared no sense of connection with the viewers, but he wasn’t a baddie either so it became very hard for viewers to know his niche.

Quagmire

Quagmire Family Guy

What can be said about Quagmire that hasn’t been said before? Makers of the show have styled his character to be an obvious sexual predator, and there’s no room for speculation. But, he’s almost too problematic for jokes because he’s an established sex criminal, he kidnaps women, he hits on Lois all the time, and he’s also a registered sex offender.

In 2020, Quagmire’s character would never have been written, but creators have had to introduce some rather crazy antics to justify not writing him off.

Herbert

Herbert in Family Guy

It became really difficult to watch the old, spine-chilling pedophile Herbert hound Chris and to laugh at jokes which poke fun at just how creepy this old, war veteran is. Herbert is the most-hated character on the show for obvious reasons, but making him a physically frail war veteran doesn’t make the show funnier, it makes for a really confused, disturbing set-up.

It's almost like Seth MacFarlene was enjoying an inside joke when he designed the character but forgot to let the viewers let in on it. The fact that Herbert’s pursuits are punishable by law and is an actual real-life problem that makes children more vulnerable made it exceptionally hard to not cringe every time Herbert showed up on the screen.
