UPDATE 7/11: This article has been updated to note that the mod in question was for Fallout: New Vegas, rather than for Fallout 76.

A small group of modders is creating a vast, open-world Star Wars RPG based on Fallout: New Vegas assets. The total conversion mod, simply titled Star Wars Open Worlds, was showcased by the development duo in a three-minute YouTube video uploaded on July 9.

Fallout titles are kept fresh and exciting in perpetuity for many players thanks to the hard work of a large and dedicated modding community. Perhaps the most beloved entry in the series, 2010's Fallout: New Vegas is no exception. The Obsidian RPG that takes players on a journey across the ravaged Mojave Desert has been a recurring entertainment source for over a decade now, largely due to the never-ending additions and changes made by modders. While more recent iterations of the franchise, such as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, have since released to generally positive and mixed reception, respectively, Fallout New Vegas still holds a special place in the hearts of many fans.

While some Fallout: New Vegas modders opt to make small iterations and changes that they believe enhance the game, others have taken the opportunity to develop their own creative endeavors. Two modders, Tank Girl (aka Tank_Girl444) and Karim Najib (aka KrispyKarim517), supported by Creator's Network, are striving to make a Bethesda-style Star Wars game out of Fallout: New Vegas (via Wccftech). The ambitious mod, dubbed Star Wars Open Worlds, aims to offer twelve explorable planets, four-story paths, character customization, crafting, skills, factions, companions, and fully voice-acted characters. If that all seems like a massive undertaking, a video uploaded to Tank Girl's YouTube channel provides insight into areas, models, and characters already in development.

The trailer indicates that the developers have a serious creative vision for their project. If released, Star Wars Open Worlds looks like it could be an incredibly fun and engaging piece of Star Wars fan fiction set during the early years of the Galactic Empire's reign. Whether the mod will see the light of day, however, remains to be seen. The project doesn't have an expected release date, and the developer is unsure whether a demo will be available this year. Further complicating the matter is the fact that the Star Wars IP is owned by Disney. Without a license to produce the mod, Disney could step in and order the mod be taken down at any moment. The developer has taken steps to mitigate any interference, largely by not taking any donations or payment for the mod, but time will tell if this is enough to keep the ever-litigious Disney at bay.

Hopefully, the development team finishes the project soon and releases something truly incredible for both Star Wars enthusiasts and Bethesda fans alike. The trailer certainly seems promising, and the developer is adamant that the project will be completed. In the meantime, fans of Bethesda-style RPGs can dive into the Steel Reign update recently released for Fallout 76.
