The Fall Of The House Of Usher Story Details

Kate Siegel in The Fall of the House of Usher

Mike Flanagan's The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of an Edgar Allen Poe story, but it's set in the modern world and is very loose with how it uses the source material (while also drawing in elements from his other works). The Fall of the House of Usher story sees brother and sister Roderick (Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (McDonnell) as the ruthless and ultra-rich creators of the pharmaceutical empire Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. However, dark family secrets soon begin to spill over and the heirs of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals begin dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their past.

The original The Fall of the House of Usher story is somewhat different, and Flanagan has revealed that the miniseries will draw from several of Poe's works, not just the novella. Poe's tale sees a narrator visiting siblings Roderick and Madeline, who are in dire straits while living in their ancestral home. While Roderick believes he is dying, Madeline is actually ill and Roderick informs the narrator that Madeline has died, and he needs help putting her body in the family vault. However, Roderick begins to deteriorate rapidly and fears that Madeline may still be alive. The Fall of the House of Usher ends with Madeline's blood-soaked body chasing her brother away as their house splits in two and sinks beneath a lake.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Trailer

The first full trailer for The Fall of the House of Usher arrived in September 2023, and gave viewers a clear picture of what to expect from the modernized Edgar Allen Poe adaptation. The Usher crime family are placed front and center, with the trailer quickly establishing that their crimes will shock the world. There are also plenty of nods to Poe's work throughout, including the infamous "Nevermore" from his poem The Raven (something his name is now synonymous with).

At 2:44, the trailer is quite generous with what it reveals about The Fall of the House of Usher. Both the tone and premise are established well, and it's clear that — while being based on the works of a renowned horror author — will have plenty of snappy, almost comedic dialogue delivered by the well-rounded cast. What's more, the modern setting will doubtless create a lot of interesting plot directions, and the melding of Poe's ideas with the premise of a corrupt family of Pharmaceutical moguls could make for one of Mike Flanagan's most successful shows to date.
