Mike Flanagan begins building the cast for his Edgar Allen Poe series The Fall of the House of Usher with Mark Hamill, Carla Gugino and more. Plot details are currently unknown for the show, though it is known that it will not be a direct adaptation of the 1839 Poe short story of the same name but rather a mix of multiple of the iconic horror author's works. Flanagan is serving as creator and executive producer for The Fall of the House of Usher alongside Intrepid Pictures partner Trevor Macy and will also direct four of the eight-episode series while frequent collaborator and executive producer Michael Fimognari will helm the other four.

The Fall of the House of Usher marks the latest partnership between Flanagan and Netflix that began with the 2016 thriller Hush and blew up with The Haunting of Hill House miniseries. Flanagan followed up the adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel with a second installment in the horror anthology franchise The Haunting of Bly Manor, primarily based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, the original horror series Midnight Mass and the upcoming adaptation of Christopher Pike's The Midnight Club novels. Development on The Fall of the House of Usher was announced on the heels of Midnight Mass hitting the streaming platform and those eager to see Flanagan's approach to the works of Poe have exciting news.

The first round of the cast for Flanagan's The Fall of the House of Usher comes as an exciting development for the series and for fans of the filmmaker. Gugino and Flanagan have proven to be a beloved pairing from critics and audiences alike since first working together on the adaptation of the Stephen King novel Gerald's Game and carrying it through both seasons of The Haunting while Carl Lumbly got off to a promising start with Flanagan for Doctor Sleep as the recast Dick Hallorann. The castings of Mark Hamill and Frank Langella should also raise the level of anticipation amongst audiences for the horror series.

Flanagan's tease of his approach to Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher also proves promising after the success of The Haunting of Bly Manor. The 2020 miniseries primarily adapted Henry James' The Turn of the Screw while also adapting elements from other James works, such as the short stories "The Romance of Certain Old Clothes" and "The Jolly Corner." Those eager to learn more about The Fall of the House of Usher won't have to wait long as Flanagan is set to reveal more of the cast of the series on Friday.
