The day has finally arrived, as Fall Guys is now available on all major platforms - PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC - and has moved to a free-to-play model, with a Season Pass and a tiered progression system. Aided initially by being a free PS Plus game in 2020, Fall Guys was a surprise hit of the year, with many players being drawn toward its unique spin on the battle royale genre. Developer Mediatonic has continued to add more content to the game in the years since, with it now set to enter a new stage in 2022.
The success of Fall Guys was surprising and Mediatonic was suddenly tasked with improving the quality and adding content to the game. This might be why it took so long for the game to be ported to other systems. Fall Guys remained a PC and PlayStation exclusive for two years, despite the huge demand for the game on other systems. The game was planned to have a multiplatform release a year ago, as Fall Guys on Switch was set for 2021, but the developers faced a number of delays, and it has only just become available on other systems. This delay was partly attributed due to the developers wanting to include crossplay.
The Fall Guys beans have now spread to every modern console. Fall Guys is now available to download on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, as well as PlayStation 4 and PC. According to the official Fall Guys website, this version of the game is launching with new rounds, obstacles, shows in the custom shows options, voice chat while in party mode, weekly and marathon challenges, a new store layout, and an auto grab feature for ledges, which can be disabled if preferred. The game also supports crossplay and cross-progression across all platforms, so players don't have to be restricted to a single system.
The biggest change to Fall Guys with its new Free-For-All update is that it's now a free game. Everyone can now download and play Fall Guys for free, as the game has moved to a Season Pass model. Players can unlock items on a free progression path, but the paid Season Pass will have its own items, with 100 levels of unlocks, as well as tier skips. The first Season Pass includes costumes based on Mechagodzilla and Ezio from Assassin's Creed. The new free-to-play Fall Guys is starting over with a new Season 1, with the Seasons from the previous iteration of the game now referred to as Legacy Seasons.
Like Among Us, the popularity of Fall Guys started to diminish when lockdowns began to ease in 2021. That said, this shift to a free-to-play model should help inspire interest in Fall Guys again, especially now that it's available on platforms that didn't have it before. It's still a ton of fun, and with Fall Guys having added new content since launch, those who bounced off the game after its initial success in 2020 should give it a try, especially now that it's free.
