The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series has found a director and is set to start filming in August. The show will start on the Disney streaming service in October of 2020 if everything goes as planned. Many fans are excited to see more of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as they have just been side characters in the MCU.
Fans have loved their dynamic together on screen and are looking forward to seeing more in-depth stories about these two characters. We’ve put together a list of six things we want to see from the series and four that we don’t.
WANT: FUN BANTER BETWEEN SAM AND BUCKY
Even though they haven’t had a ton of screen time together in the MCU, their interactions together have been really fun to watch. The two started out not getting along well likely because they both wanted to be Steve Rogers’ best friend.
They have definitely had some banter moments, but we did see in Avengers: Endgame that they seemed to have a more friendly relationship that had developed. Fans would definitely like to see more of the two of them joking around and bantering in the series.
DON’T: MAKING BUCKY’S WINTER SOLDIER IDENTITY FRONT AND CENTER
While we all enjoyed seeing Bucky as the Winter Soldier, this is an identity that he has left behind. As the Winter Soldier, he was brainwashed and tortured to be a weapon.
Bucky has had his trigger words deactivated and has a new arm, so it would be best if the show focuses on him moving on to a different identity and figuring himself out. While having the Winter Soldier in the title of the show makes sense, hopefully, it doesn’t focus in too much on the past.
WANT: MORE IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OF BUCKY’S TRAUMA
While focusing on the Winter Soldier wouldn’t be so great, focusing on the impacts of that time of his life is necessary. Bucky is a person who has gone through a significant amount of trauma from being experimented on, brainwashed, and tortured and then having to cope with the loss of his life in the 40s after he was freed from HYDRA. As a side character in the MCU, his issues haven’t been focused on too much, but this series is the perfect time to do so.
DON’T: FORCED ROMANCES
The MCU is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to romances. There are some couples that make a lot of sense and have good chemistry and build up while there are others that seem to come out of nowhere and feel very forced. If romance becomes a focus of this series, they should ensure that the couples are built up and make sense.
A television series definitely gives more time to focus on these relationships, so they shouldn’t feel rushed. Having Sharon Carter return is definitely a great thing, and they shouldn't just sideline her into a romance that makes no sense like they did with her and Steve.
WANT: AN EXPLORATION OF SAM’S CHARACTER AND STORY
We only learn a few things about Sam Wilson’s past in the MCU. We know he was in the Air Force and was part of pararescue where he was given his Falcon wings. We also know he lost his best friend Riley while running these missions.
The MCU didn’t have the time to focus on many other details, but The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will have all the time available to let us get to know Sam Wilson better both in his past and in his present.
DON’T: NOT ALLOWING THE TWO TO BE CLOSE FRIENDS
While seeing Sam and Bucky not get along can be funny, and the two will definitely probably argue at times in the series, the show should also focus on them becoming friends. In Endgame, we see a scene of Sam briefly comforting Bucky at Tony Stark’s funeral.
Having more friendship moments like this throughout the series is definitely necessary, and fans would love to see their relationship change and evolve over time.
WANT: MORE INFORMATION ABOUT STEVE ROGERS AND THE TIME TRAVEL THING
Many fans are still confused about the ending of Endgame and how the time travel works as far as Steve Rogers is concerned. The directors and writers of Endgame have given conflicting information on the timelines and how the time travel worked in this scenario.
Hopefully, this series will be set post Endgame so that these issues can be addressed. Sam and Bucky were the people Steve was closest to, so getting some resolution for them and the fact Steve did what he did is also necessary.
DON’T: TIME TRAVEL
While there were likely be some amount of time travel discussion if the series takes place after Endgame, the show would be wise to not do more time travel.
While they should definitely talk about it in the context of Steve Rogers, it would be a misstep to have time travel occur in this series. Also, having the story take place in the past would seem to limit the series and the characters, so hopefully that doesn’t happen either.
WANT: CAMEOS FROM OTHER MCU CHARACTERS
One thing fans have always loved about the MCU. Since the Disney series will be apart of the MCU, there are many opportunities to have cameos of other characters.
If there are flashback scenes, it would definitely make sense to have Black Widow at some point. The Russo Brothers have also hinted about Steve Rogers returning to the MCU, so it’s not entirely out of the question that he could appear at some point in this series
WANT: SEEING HOW SAM TAKES ON THE CAPTAIN AMERICA IDENTITY
At the end of Endgame, Sam is given the Captain America shield by old Steve Rogers. Falcon taking up the Captain America mantle also happened in the comics. The MCU giving him the shield was a great choice, and this new series is the perfect chance to explore this.
Seeing Sam figure out being Captain America while still being himself and how he takes up that title is a fascinating subject. The show should definitely make this a focus.
