Warning: SPOILERS for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman teased an appearance by a surprise hero in episode 1. The debut of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's second Disney+ series is imminent, and and it sounds like it has a lot on its plate. Not only will The Falcon and the Winter Soldier tackle a post-Blip world and the political ramifications of half the population disappearing and returning, but it will also take on the more personal traumas lingering for both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes.

On top of all that, it sounds like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has plenty of surprises in store. The titular pair seem to visit Mutant city Madripoor in some of the trailers for the series, teasing a connection to the MCU's X-Men. The series will also connect to at least three other Marvel projects, although those involved could not reveal which projects those were. Now, Spellman teases the presence of a new hero in episode 1, and the showrunner may have inadvertently revealed the identity of said hero.

Comic Book Movie asked Spellman about the mystery role of actor Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), and the director revealed he would be playing a character named Joaquín. Spellman stopped short of revealing the character's last name. He did say, though, that he thinks "Joaquín was asking the same question in the first episode" about his character.

Joaquin Torres Sam Wilson Falcon

The only character with a connection to Sam Wilson named Joaquin is Joaquín Torres, and that name is sure to excite viewers. In the comics, Torres becomes Sam Wilson's successor as Falcon after working closely with Sam during his tenure as Captain America. Torres also has connections to the Serpent Society, a group mentioned in Captain America: Civil War. It seems The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may at least tease the villainous group as part of Torres' origin story if they are not brought on board as a lingering villainous presence in the series that will come around to play a prominent part in a future project.

How involved Ramirez's Torres is in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier remains to be seen, but it sounds like the reveal of him as Sam's Falcon successor could play out over the show's six episode run. This could imply Sam will, in fact, end up taking over as Captain America by the time The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concludes, something audiences have been clamoring for. He'll have to face off against the U.S. government and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) first, but Sam's future in the MCU is bright, so it's safe to say his role as Captain America will be hard earned.
