The name of Zemo’s contact in The Falcon and Winter Soldier episode 3, Selby, appears to be an additional X-Men Easter egg. The MCU hasn’t made use of the X-Men yet, but it did include a major location from the mutant corner of the Marvel Universe in the Disney+ show’s latest episode. Madripoor is the setting of numerous storylines tied to the X-Men.

In the comic books, the city of Madripoor was a hotspot for criminal and mutant activity, which is one reason why it’s been featured in so many X-Men and Wolverine comics dating back to the mid-1980s. It was officially introduced into the MCU as a destination for Sam (Anthony Mackie), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), and Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), who believed that it held answers related to the super soldier mystery. The person they came to Madripoor to find was Selby. Played by Imelda Corcoran, Selby was the shady owner of a night club called the Brass Monkey. It’s interesting to note that Selby shares her name with a very minor character in Marvel Comics.

Selby made his first and only appearance in the 1996 comic book, Excalibur #104, which was an X-Men spinoff title. In the issue, he was introduced as a mutant with the ability to easily read binary language. He used his powers to decipher data on the Legacy Virus, and eventually joined his criminal cohorts in a fight with Captain Britain’s superhero team on Muir Island. Though this character is male and seems to have little in common with the MCU’s Selby on the surface, they do possess some similarities. Excalibur’s Selby was a member of the Mutant Liberation Front, an underground network of mutant anarchists led by prominent X-Men villain, Stryfe. The version that appears in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn’t a mutant, but she is heavily involved in a criminal organization based in a city from X-Men comics. Plus, both work as fixers who use their connections to the benefit of their respective groups.

It makes sense for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 3 to have X-Men nods like Selby, especially when taking its setting into consideration. Madripoor has been visited by multiple Marvel Comics heroes, but its strongest ties will always be to the X-Men and Wolverine. The show didn’t directly mention any of its mutant residents, but it did drop a reference to Hightown, which is the area of the city that Magneto built his own version of the X-Mansion in the 2010s.

Since their stay in Madripoor was short, there’s no telling what key figures in the mutant community reside in the MCU’s take on the city. However, now that’s its confirmed to exist, it can always be revisited later. Since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier doesn't seem to be done with Sharon Cater (Emily VanCamp) yet, the main characters could go back. But if not, it could still reappear in future MCU projects.
