Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 6, "One World, One People."

Here's what to know about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2, including its potential release date, story, and whether or not it will happen. Marvel's second Disney+ show has continued the stories of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes post-Avengers: Endgame, and brought things to a close with Falcon & Winter Soldier episode 6, "One World, One People." The finale wraps up most of the plot points, while also setting things in store for the future.

Building on the events of the previous episode, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale sees Sam become Captain America, wearing the new costume and wings he was gifted by Bucky (which he had made in Wakanda), the Flag-Smashers both defeated and yet getting what they wanted, John Walker taking on a new identity, and Bucky trying to make amends and atone for his past actions as the Winter Soldier. It's a lot to pack in, and so unsurprisingly there are plenty of threads dangling for a possible season 2.

While Marvel's first Disney+ show, WandaVision, had a very definitive ending that meant there was no room for a direct follow-up, things are different in terms of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2. There's certainly scope for more, should Marvel decide it wants out.

Will The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Season 2 Happen?

Marvel has a lot of new MCU TV shows coming to Disney+, and as it stands everything confirmed is just for one season, just like WandaVision. However, it has also been revealed that some shows will get second seasons, although it's not known which ones they will be, and Kevin Feige has said ideas for Falcon & Winter Soldier season 2 have been discussed. That's no guarantee of it happening, but it has been another success in terms of viewership for the streaming service, so there's a reasonable chance it will happen.

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Season 2 Release Date

Sam as Captain America in Falcon and Winter Soldier Finale

If The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 were to happen, then when would it release? Marvel has a packed roster of upcoming shows across 2021-22, so it would depend on when there's room in the production schedule. With the first wave of shows either filming or beginning production in 2021, then it seems more likely that Falcon & Winter Soldier wouldn't begin shooting until either late-2021 or probably early-2022. It's difficult to get a full gauge on how long production would take on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2, since the first was so heavily disrupted by COVID-19, but a few months filming and then post-production seems a safe bet, meaning The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 could have an early-2023 release date, perhaps in a similar slot to season 1.

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Season 2 Cast

Should The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 happen, then most of its cast would likely be back. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are very much the stars of the show, not to mention the title characters, so they'd have to return. Both actors previously signed long-term contracts for MCU movie appearances, but the TV shows presumably have separate deals - either way, it would be a surprise if they weren't returning as Sam and Bucky in some capacity. Based on how season 1 ends, then Falcon & Winter Soldier season 2's cast would also have to include Wyatt Russell as John Walker, aka US Agent, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and perhaps Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo.

The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Season 2 Story Details

John Walker US Agent and Valentina in Falcon and Winter Soldier Finale

While the Flag-Smashers are defeated, there is plenty of setup for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2's story in the season 1 finale. The biggest hint of this comes in episode 6's post-credits scene, which sees Sharon Carter being granted a pardon and given a job back with the government, only to reveal in a phone call she plans on taking them down from the inside. It's not revealed who she's speaking to, but the implication is either Zemo or, more likely, Valentina. This could well setup either the Thunderbolts or the Dark Avengers for the MCU's future, which could be the central threat that Sam and Bucky have to deal with in Falcon & Winter Soldier season 2. Leading the way with that is John Walker, who has now adopted his US Agent person from the comics; while it steered away from the outright villainous turn it setup, his different methods could bring him into conflict with Sam and Bucky once again.

Will Falcon & Winter Soldier Season 2 Be Titled Captain America & The Winter Soldier ?

Captain America and the Winter Soldier

The end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's finale reveals a new title for the show: Captain America and the Winter Soldier. This reflects that Sam Wilson has truly become Captain America, an identity he confirms within the episode itself, while Bucky is - despite his healing - still referred to as the Winter Soldier. Since Sam is now Cap, then having The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 be called that would no longer make sense, so logically then it would be using the new title.
