The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will focus on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Captain America's shield. Marvel Studios' inaugural series for Disney+ won't premiere until next year, but production is already in full swing at Atlanta. Teaming up Steve Rogers' best buds, Sam and Bucky (Sebastian Stan), the project will also see the return of familiar faces such as Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl's villainous Baron Zemo.

Plot details have been scarce thus far with Marvel Studios trying to keep their Phase 4 plans relatively under wraps. However, it's been confirmed that the series will come after the events of Avengers: Endgame as Sam and Bucky go on their own heroic journeys. Now, MCU architect Kevin Feige provides new narrative information for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

During his appearance at Brazil's ongoing CCXP 2019 (via Comicbook), Feige took the stage to further tease what lies ahead in the MCU. Along with revealing the first look images for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Feige also said that the series will revolve around Sam Wilson's claim to the Captain America shield - and essentially the superhero title. The Marvel Studios president didn't go into specifics but he emphasized the weight of responsibility bestowed on Sam now that he has the shield.

“We saw Old Man Cap hand that shield to Sam Wilson at the end of [Endgame], and the question is, what did he do with it next? What does it mean for Sam Wilson and that shield?. That’s a big responsibility, and that’s very much what the show focuses on and is about.”

Falcon Winter Soldier US Agent Captain America Evil

The show's writer, Derek Kolstad previously teased that while Steve chose Sam as the next wielder of the iconic shield, assuming the role as the Star Spangled Avenger may not come automatically. This fits in an older report that a pivotal plot point in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could involve the government not accepting Sam as the next Captain America and the casting of Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka U.S. Agent. In the comics Walker was initially introduced in the '80s as a supervillain, Super-Patriot and was depicted as a contrast to Captain America's core message of good patriotism. With all these bits of information fitting the idea that Sam might have to stake his claim to the shield despite Steve personally choosing him as his successor, chances are that U.S. Agent is the government's pick as the next bearer of the shield.

As much of the story details for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that have come out thus far revolve around Sam's arc in the show, it's curious how Bucky fits in all of this. The rehabilitating hero has gone through a lot the past several years; before turning into dust in Avengers: Infinity War, he was on his road to recovery in Wakanda - even getting a new persona as the White Wolf. Considering that he's also a title character for the upcoming Marvel Studios show, it's safe to assume that he'll also be a prominent player in the narrative. Fans would just have to wait to know what his role will be.
