The latest The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set photos reveal a first look at Wyatt Russell as John Walker with the Captain America shield and a new costume. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the upcoming Disney+ series will be Marvel Studios' very first TV show as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, reprising their film roles as Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier and Sam Wilson aka Falcon, respectively. They'll be joined by returning Captain America movie actors Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter.

As confirmed by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige at last year's D23 Expo, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will also introduce John Walker, played by Russell. In the Marvel Comics, Walker adopted the mantle of Captain America for a time before becoming U.S. Agent. However in the MCU, Sam Wilson is expected to become the next Captain America after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave his shield to Falcon at the end of Avengers: Endgame. There have been reports that Sam will receive pushback from the U.S. government in becoming the new Captain America, which seems to be true based on theses new set photos from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Today, Page Six posted the latest set photos from the Marvel show's production, all featuring Russell in costume as John Walker. First, he appears in a formal military uniform, then in a redesigned Captain America costume - and wiedling what appears to be Steve Rogers' shield. Though The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been filming for some time, this is our first look at Russell in costume as John Walker.

These new set photos seem to back up earlier reports that the U.S. government doesn't want Sam Wilson to become Captain America in the MCU, and will instead give John Walker the title. What's unclear, though, is how the government gets Steve's shield or if they created a Captain America shield of their own. Perhaps Sam gave it over willingly, not wanting to take on his friend's mantle, or maybe the government took it from Sam, who's forbidden from being the new Captain America after he violated the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War. It remains to be seen what exactly this new - possibly evil - Captain America storyline in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier entails until we learn more about the Disney+ series.

Still, it's likely The Falcon and the Winter Soldier serves as one long origin story for Sam Wilson as Captain America, with Mackie's character officially donning the costume and mantle of the superhero by the end of the show's first season. It would be a little jarring for Sam to immediately become the new Captain America with little explanation. Spreading out that transition over the course of six episodes allows showrunner Malcolm Spellman to explore what exactly it means for Sam to become Captain America, both in terms of his character and the larger MCU. So while Russell's John Walker may be the new Captain America at the start of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, fans shouldn't be surprised if that changes by the show's ending.
