The Falcon and The Winter Soldier writer reveals that the show will feature characters from the earliest MCU films. Originally set to be Marvel Studios' inaugural Disney+ series, the coronavirus pandemic has pushed the series to be delayed with filming still ongoing in Prague. No official word yet when it will premiere, but rumor has it that it's tipped to debut in January. Regardless if this is the case, a new interesting details for the project just made it more exciting.

Steve Rogers is officially retired from his duty as Captain America, but before he fully left the primary MCU timeline, he chose his successor: Sam Wilson. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Sam was handed a new shield, effectively making him the next Star-Spangled Avenger. His future adventures will be tied with Bucky's as the pair faces their individual and collective issues in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Aside from the titular characters, the show will also bring some familiar faces in Agent 13, Baron Zemo, and Batroc.

As it turns out, however, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will feature more established MCU players who have been in the franchise since its first few years. Writer Derek Kolstad reveals this during his guesting on the Script Apart podcast (via Empire). Unfortunately, he didn't give any clues as to who these characters might be.

“What I will say is that there are characters from the earliest Marvel movies that are coming back. We’re layering them in and reinventing them in a way that’s gonna shift the storytelling structure. It’s f***ing awesome."

Marvel Studios has been mum about what can be expected from The Falcon & The Winter Soldier as marketing for the show is also on hold. That said, thanks to set videos and images, comments from people involved, and the brief footage that was released thus far, there are certain elements in it that have already been revealed. For starters, the involvement of U.S. Agent/John Walker means that Sam assuming the role of Captain America won't be that easy. Meanwhile, the casting of Carl Lumbly as supposedly Isiah Bradley hints that the series will delve deep into the history of the Super Soldier program and its contemporary dubbed "Rebirth." Since the persona of Captain America is rooted in the past with Steve originally from the '40s, it's not out of the realm of possibility that The Falcon & The Winter Soldier features key characters who played a pivotal part in the creation of the hero through flashbacks or otherwise.

Other than the said possibilities, the involvement of Bucky in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is enough reason for Marvel Studios to revisit their earlier films and feature certain characters who are linked to him. Like Steve, it's safe to expect that Bucky will have some struggles fitting in the modern era, especially since his best pal is no longer an active superhero to help guide him through this journey. As a way for him to move forward, he might need to reconcile with his past including his stint as a HYDRA assassin.
