Captain America's legacy continues with the mantle being passed on to Sam Wilson. Although he was hesitant during the Falcon & The Winter Soldier series, he eventually takes over and wears the shield with pride and dignity. The character wears his variant of the suit, which diverges from Steve Rogers', actively becoming his own Captain America in both the comic and film adaptations.

There are elements about the suit that is accurate to the source material and yet, certain differences were explicitly made for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Comic Accurate - General Design

Sam Wilson poses as the new Captain America with the sun shining behind him.

When Sam Wilson first donned the mantle in the Captain America comics, he was strikingly different from his predecessors. For example, when Bucky Barnes took over as Captain America, his suit still maintained similar iconography, like the cowl. However, Sam Wilson's suit is a comfortable fusion between his Falcon suit and the colors of Captain America.

During the final episode of Falcon & The Winter Soldier, the suit stunned hardcore fans due to how close it was to the source material, with the white elements of the costume, the red goggles, and the Vibranium wings on his back being comic-accurate.

MCU Original - Modified To Fit The MCU

Although the suit is comic-accurate, modifications are present in the MCU iteration of the character. Elements, like the abdominal area, have a similar lining to the various Captain America suits portrayed over the years.

But the most notable feature is the cowl, designed so that it would be easier for the actor to move his neck. This cowl design contrasts the one-piece that is present in the comics, although it still maintains the same function, regardless.

Comic Accurate - Vibranium Wings

Sam Wilson as Captain America in Marvel Comics

Sam Wilson's wings are indestructible due to being made out of Vibranium, the same metal used for Captain America's shield and Black Panther's suit.

The wings protect Sam, while maintaining maneuverability. In the pages of Marvel Comics, Sam's new wings were also made of Vibranium, although they have gone through various changes over the years, from titanium to a hard-light version.

MCU Original - Color Of The Wings

One of the minor changes to Sam's costume is the color of his wings. In the comics, Sam's wings are a bright red, transferring over from his Falcon persona.

However, the MCU changed Sam's wings to fit the theme of Captain America, and instead, they have a white and blue color scheme. This streamlined approach makes it easier on the viewer's eyes and is less of a contrast than the comics' approach.

Comic Accurate - Assistance Of Redwing

Falcon and Redwing

Redwing is the iconic companion that follows Sam Wilson. Whether it's a real bird or a mechanical one, its general purpose of helping the character remains intact. In the comics, Redwing and Sam share a telepathic bond that allows them an edge against enemies.

The MCU's bond is different because the Redwing in the MCU is hardware, meaning that the connection between them is more practical than a deep connection.

MCU Original - Different Mechanical Redwings

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Redwing With Laser

As previously elaborated, the Redwing in the MCU is vastly different from the comic book incarnation, as it's a mechanized drone as opposed to an actual bird. However, the modified variant created for the Captain America suit allows for multiple Redwings to assist Sam Wilson.

A good example of this is when he saved the hostages during the climax of the Disney+ show, with the various Redwings helping him to stop the van from going over a cliff.

Comic Accurate - Shield

Sam Wilson Captain America Shield Falcon

It wouldn't be Captain America without his mighty shield. Although he isn't as proficient as Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson still has a talent for wielding the shield.

Combined with his new suit, he can perform stunts not even Steve can do. He can use it similarly in the comics, as he can wield the shield with solid skill, proving that Sam Wilson is a worthy successor to the Captain America mantle.

MCU Original - Entirely Vibranium

Captain America Thor

Although the shield is still indestructible, the structure's material is not the same between the comics and MCU. The comic's version has a unique composition - a fusion of Vibranium, steel alloy, and proto-adamantium.

The MCU composition is entirely made out of Vibranium only. As a result, the durability of the shield could, arguably, be weaker. However, it offers a similar function, despite this.

Comic Accurate - How The Suit Works

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Fundamentally, the two costumes offer similar usage in combat. It provides added protection to Sam Wilson, while making full use of his previous skillset. These include the wings for flight and acting as potential shields against solid hits.

The MCU version of the suit still makes usage of the tactical gear that Sam Wilson employs in a fight. These include his goggles, the different redwings, and how the shield comes off the harness. However, the suit's widespread use remains consistent with both the comics and MCU.

MCU Original - Made By Wakanda

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

When Sam Wilson took over the Captain America mantle in the comics, where he obtained his outfit is left unknown. Although in the comics, due to Steve Rogers being too weak to continue and choosing Sam, it's argued that he pulled in a few favors. After all, Wakanda had modified Sam Wilson's Falcon suit, so his new suit could be from there too.

In the MCU, Wakanda created the costume due to Bucky requesting a favor, making it clear that the suit comes from Wakanda.
