A fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe builds a functional version of the wings Sam Wilson wears as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The aforementioned Disney+ series follows Sam Wilson's (Anthony Mackie) struggle to reconcile the mantle bestowed upon him by Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame. At the beginning of the series, Sam donates Steve’s vibranium shield to the Smithsonian’s Captain America exhibit, believing its legacy is better off untouched. However, the government doesn’t honor this sentiment and anoints John Walker (Wyatt Russell) as the new Captain America.

With the help of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Sam deals with the increasingly problematic Walker and the deceitful Baron Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) as they all attempt to defuse the Flag-Smashers, a group of anti-nationalist super soldiers led by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman). When Walker desecrates the shield with the blood of a Flag-Smasher he kills, Sam and Bucky take it back by force in a battle where Falcon’s wings are destroyed. In the finale, “One World, One People,” Sam dons a comic-book-accurate suit and wings as the new and improved Captain America before inspiring the world to “do better.”

Greg Enriquez recently shared a TikTok showing off his homemade Captain America wings and shield. Set to the Avengers’ theme, the clip shows him extend the wings and detach the shield. Check it out below.

It’s no surprise The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is inspiring fans to cosplay. While obsessed with Steve’s legacy, the show is more about moving forward. By introducing discarded super soldier Isaiah Bradley, the show confronted systemic issues like racism, classicism, violence, and institutionalization within and outside of American society. Rather than take/desire the super-soldier serum and try to be something he’s not, Sam essentially forms a new identity as the first black Captain America, something reflected by his Wakandan Falcon/Captain gear.

Not long after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concluded, it was announced that the show’s head writer, Malcolm Spellman, was working on a fourth Captain America film. Though no confirmation has been made yet whether Mackie or Stan would be reprising their roles, both actors have expressed a desire to stay with Marvel Studios as long as possible. With Marvel looking to keep their storytelling as diverse as possible and Mackie receiving universal acclaim for his work in the series, it seems more than likely that he’ll headline at least a couple of projects. With Falcon just starting his journey as Captain America, he will likely inspire several more fans to make their own creations based on his character.
