Apple's SharePlay is a convenient way to enjoy content with friends and family over a FaceTime call, and it's possible view all the compatible apps already installed on an iPhone without leaving an ongoing call. SharePlay was first introduced as part of iOS 15, and though its only been available on iPhones for a short time, the concept has been around for a while via third-party apps and services. The most notable is Teleparty, which is a Google Chrome extension that allows users to stream Netflix and other sites concurrently.

The addition of SharePlay on iPhone, iPad, and Mac products made it possible for users to quickly and easily view content together without the use of any third-party applications or extensions. Since the feature was released, Apple has continued to expand its functionality, especially as it relates to the company's own in-house services. Shortly after SharePlay was made public, Apple Fitness+ gained SharePlay support with Group Workouts. Just a few months ago in September 2022, the release of iOS 16 added SharePlay to iMessage – eliminating the need to initiate a FaceTime call in order to use SharePlay.

Since SharePlay is a relatively new iOS feature, users might not know which apps support the functionality. Additionally, some apps have committed to supporting SharePlay in the future, so the list of supported apps is constantly changing. Apple's iOS 16 update makes it possible for users to see a real-time list of the apps already installed on their devices that are compatible with SharePlay. After a FaceTime call is started, tap the SharePlay icon, which looks like a screen overlaid with a person. A small window will open giving users the option to share their screen or use SharePlay with a compatible application. Some examples from Apple include Apple Music, Fitness, and TV.

Starting A SharePlay From The App List

Scrolling through the list of app icons will show the installed apps that support SharePlay on a user's device. Tap on an app icon to start a SharePlay in that application, which will open the selected app. The FaceTime call will remain active while content is being selected, and all the people on the FaceTime call must be subscribed to the streaming service, if applicable. The SharePlay will only be started with other people on the call after content has been selected — like a specific song, album, or video. When the content has been selected, the SharePlay window will either open in the full screen FaceTime call or as a picture-in-picture window.

To find out all the apps that support SharePlay while in a FaceTime call, tap the SharePlay icon and press the 'More' button next to 'Apps for SharePlay.' This will open a page in the App Store that serves as a curated collection of quality apps that can be used with SharePlay. Supported apps range from social media sites like TikTok to fun games like Kahoot. SharePlay is a great iOS feature, but getting familiar with the best apps that support it can be tricky. FaceTime makes it easy by allowing users to view all the apps compatible with SharePlay on their device without leaving the call.
