Social media platform MeWe is continuing to grow its user base in competition with Facebook. Although the social media giant continues to dominate, Facebook has found itself on the receiving end of questions of trust. At the same time, alternative services have been surfacing and growing, with MeWe among the most popular so far. MeWe is available for desktop computers, iPhone, and Android.

Facebook has been one of the premier websites for social media for the better part of two decades. However, there have been concerns that the platform is growing too big for users to feel like they still have personal connections with their family and friends. Another argument to be made is that Facebook had become 'too corporate' with the company in constant need of addressing privacy issues and other controversies.

Though MeWe first launched in May 2012, the platform has since made internal changes and redirected its branding efforts. These changes were designed to counteract the perceived business practices that legacy platforms like Facebook are believed to be making. With this new direction, over the past several months the platform has managed to draw in more than nine million users, with MeWe recently Tweeting that it has now earned the number-one social media app spot on iOS.

What Do Users Like About MeWe?

MeWe is advertised as a "privacy first" platform that claims it will never attempt to collect data from users. The platform also insists that all content shared belongs to the user that posts it. Advertisements are also currently not present on MeWe, which is likely to be another aspect that some users don't like with Facebook. The MeWe platform also comes with many features that have been commonplace in Facebook, such as content sharing, chatting, video calls, and groups, so the company is counting on its uniqueness to persuade users, but at the same time, not sacrificing features that users are accustomed to. While some optional features, like extra storage space, cost money, MeWe wants to assure users that they have total control over their content.

While there are no signs of Facebook hemorrhaging users any time soon, smaller platforms like MeWe are looking to take advantage of the pressure Facebook is now facing. If trends over the last few months are an indication, the chances of MeWe growing a stable and healthy user base seem pretty good. It will be interesting to see how the MeWe platform changes over time after pledges to give freedom to users while also hoping to grow more mainstream.
