F9: The Fast Saga’s infamous speech about the main characters being invincible could be setting up a tragic ending for Fast and Furious 11. Two more core films are been planned to wrap up the main story of the franchise, with the first, Fast and Furious 10, scheduled to arrive in theaters in April 2023. That sequel will be followed up by Fast and Furious 11, which promises to bring the whole blockbuster franchise to a conclusion.

Though there are shining moments of character development and compelling ensemble chemistry in the Vin Diesel-fronted Fast and Furious saga, the series is first and foremost focused on the action. Each film features big, bombastic setpieces meant to outdo the prior sequel, resulting in an absurd chain of self-one-upmanship that’s made Fast a massive hit worldwide. Despite the serious stakes of those sequences, however, they’ve rarely meant actual physical harm for the series’ protagonist, leading Roman (Tyrese Gibson) to theorize in F9 that the crew may actually be invincible.

Roman’s speech is a funny meta nod to the series' ludicrous nature, but it also could be foreshadowing more serious twists in the next two films. The claims from Diesel and NBCUniversal that Fast and Furious 10 and 11 will provide a real dramatic climax suggests that not every main character may make it out alive. Some fans have theorized that Dom will make a noble sacrifice in Fast and Furious 11 in order to save his family, which would certainly fit with the character’s personal moral code. It’s also possible other prominent characters - including Roman himself - could die before the saga crosses the finishing line.

Of course, balancing a serious plotline like the death of a protagonist with the absurdist tone of Fast and Furious is a tricky proposition. The series has killed off major Fast and Furious characters before, but those figures have ended up returning to life in not-so-shocking twists about as often as not. The resurrections of characters like Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) or Han (Sung Kang) have only deepened the feeling of invincibility around Dom Toretto and his family, which makes killing someone for good in Fast and Furious 11 a challenging proposition for the writers’ room.

Fast and Furious obviously needs some big twists in the next two films to give the final chapter the necessary weight, and killing off an important character is an easy way to do that. It could also end up that a member of the crew dies at the end of Fast and Furious 10, setting up a revenge storyline for the final film. The gang has been mostly invincible for a long time, as F9 pointed out, but Fast and Furious 11 might show just how mortal they all actually are.
