The Expendables may not be out for another month, but that doesn't mean you can't already experience the high-octane action explosions and death-defying adventure from the film... in 8-bit.
Today, Lionsgate released an 8-Bit Contra-style side-scrolling shoot-em up game to build anticipation for the movie - best of all, it's free to play on The Expendables Facebook page. Well, not entirely free, you still have to Like the film's Facebook page in order to gain access.
The Expendables game allows players to take control of Yin Yang (Jet Li), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), and Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) - and let's you utilize an array of attacks including gunfire, throwing stars, knives, slide kicks, and other tough-guy action moves against the minions of the evil dictator, General Garza (David Zayas).
Each character provides a slightly different gameplay experience - however if you're looking to relive the gunplay, and brutal difficulty, of Contra, Barney Ross is the only way to go.
While there aren't any hostages to rescue, there are three levels to battle through: Jungle Stronghold, Dictator's Fortress, and Defeat General Garza.
Beating all three levels, unlocks "Bonus Mode" and beating "Bonus Mode" provides players with an 8-bit version of the most recent Expendables banner, as well as an alternate ending. In addition, achieving one of the top 10 all-time high scores in "Bonus Mode" will eventually net you some sweet Expendables gear - though, at this time, it's unclear exactly what the prizes will be.
Currently, the high score is held by Marcos Jos with 149,175 points, but getting into the top 10 will only require you to beat out Paulo Eugenio at 33,830 points - of course, to stay in the running for prizes, you'll have to keep bringing your a-game until the contest ends (no end date has been announced yet).
While you're unable to kick dictator butt with the rest of the Expendables (Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Bruce Willis), The Expendables game is certainly great retro fun and a terrific way to build anticipation for the upcoming film.
The Expendables opens August 13, 2010
