Sylvester Stallone's Expendables 3 script makes room for even more deadly old-timers to join the cast (like Wesley Snipes and Jackie Chan), in addition to some "young bloods." The latter's role in the film look to be more important than those for the whipper-snappers in Expendables 2 - Liam Hemsworth and Nan Yu - judging by newly-released plot details, in addition to an update on the casting for EX3's fresher-faced additions.
Sly took to his personal Twitter account to confirm that the Expendables 3 cast will include two younger people who boast very impressive athletic credentials: the Olympic medal-winning Judo fighter and Mixed Martial Artist Ronda Rousey and the welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz. Meanwhile, news sites around the 'Web are reporting that Kellan Lutz is completing negotiations to join them, along with returning action movie icons Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham.
These youthful and/or untested actors will fit into the story as follows (according to The Wrap):
According to insiders, "Expendables 3" will introduce a younger group of tech-savvy action heroes who initially clash with the older crew, though they eventually team up to save the day.
Rousey and Ortiz will make their acting debuts in Expendables 3, but the requirements of their roles - look convincingly tough and kill stuff - won't exactly be taxing, especially since it'll be the older cast members who will be expected to bring personality and charisma to director Patrick Hughes' installment. That's not to mention, guys like Sly and Arnold will be handling this series' bread and butter elements: self-referential humor, cheesy one-liners and ridiculous action scenes overflowing with gunfire and explosions.
Lutz, on the other hand, appeared in the Twilight franchise and will headline the upcoming Hercules 3D - a.k.a the Hercules movie not starring Dwayne Johnson - yet, in all likelihood, his role will probably be the same as his younger peers: to get a crash-course in being a badass from his elders (and maybe teach those old dogs a new trick or two in return).
Speaking of "old dogs": Snipes and Chan are expected to join the Expendables franchise for this third round, alongside returning cast members Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Terry Crews. We've been hearing rumors that both Steven Seagal and Mel Gibson could join in on the fun this round, but for the time being neither of these 1980s/90s action movie legends are said to be officially involved with the project.
Meanwhile, we're still awaiting confirmation that Resident Evil's Milla Jovovich is, for certain, going to be a cast member, and the latest update made by Nicolas Cage himself is that the over-acting maestro is very unlikely to make an appearance in the film (whether or not Cage is telling the truth is another story).
The Expendables 3 opens in U.S. theaters on August 15th, 2014.
