There are so many iconic male action stars present and accounted for in The Expendables 2 that the film’s teaser trailer was more a glorified roll call, rather than a full-fledged theatrical promo. Similarly, the previously-released unofficial Expendables 2 poster was virtually overflowing with cinematic badasses – and yet it still didn’t manage to include every noteworthy actor who makes an appearance in the sequel.
Lionsgate has unveiled the first official one-sheet for the new Expendables flick – and, for better or for worse, Sylvester Stallone’s onscreen alter ego, Barney Ross, is the only testosterone-fueled mercenary to be seen.
To refresh your memory: Expendables 2 boasts a cast that includes Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Liam Hemsworth. Hence, while Stallone’s character looks impressive enough on his own (striking a nice pose and being engulfed by flame and rubble), it’s kind of odd that he’s the only one who appears in the flesh, rather than merely by name. Presumably, the rest of the team will show up in the next one-sheet.

It’s long been rumored that Expendables 2 (partially as a homage to 1980s and ’90s action cinema) would embrace the classic “This time, it’s personal!” sequel logline; indeed, the film’s official synopsis has confirmed that, in the sequel, Ross and his co-workers set off on a vengeance-fueled mission when one of their one is brutally murdered on what should’ve been a walk-in-the-park job, as provided to them by Mr. Church (Willis).
Even though Stallone has traded off directorial duties to Simon West (Con Air, The Mechanic), it turns out he is still involved in the screenwriting process. According to IMDb, his collaborators include relative newcomer David Agosto, Ken Kaufman (Space Cowboys, The Missing), and Richard Wenk (16 Blocks, The Mechanic).
Between that writing team, Stallone vacating the director’s chair (his work on the first Expendables flick is generally considered pretty hackneyed), and the additions of much-coveted stars like Van Damme and Norris to the cast, there’s good reason to think The Expendables 2 will be one of the rare followups that marks a significant improvement on its predecessor – and that’s an encouraging thought.
The Expendables 2 will hit theaters around the U.S. on August 17th, 2012.
