The producers of the critically acclaimed sci-fi series The Expanse have teased their plans for a big series finale. The show premiered in December of 2015 with its first three seasons airing on the SyFy Channel. When SyFy canceled The Expanse after those three seasons in 2018, Amazon Prime Video revived it, and the subsequent seasons were released on its platform. Amazon announced a renewal of the series for a sixth and final season back in November 2020.

The Expanse is based on a series of novels by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who use the pen name James S. A. Corey. The television series has packed those novels into five thrilling seasons so far, and the most current one has left viewers on edge. Season 5 of The Expanse ended with The Battle for the Sol Gate and several unanswered questions. Now, season 6 is on the way to wrap everything up.

The producers of the series, Naren Shankar, Abraham, and Franck, have now teased what they say will be a big finale. They spoke in an interview with Collider dodging some specifics about the last season but still saying, "Let's put it this way. There's going to be a lot going on in that last episode." Shankar and Abraham added, "I feel like we're going out big, I think we're going out well. We ain't going out small." Franck elaborated:

I think, the thing that season six does is it pays off the story that we began in episode one of season one where the Martians, the Earthers and the Belters were all in this incredibly uneasy and unstable political system with the Belters absolutely being at the foot of that table and everybody fighting for their place in the solar system. I think we pay off that story in a very satisfying way. And we keep some of the mystery intact involving the greater forces of the universe that humans are only starting to become aware. If we want to tell more stories.

The producers also confirmed The Expanse season 6 has already started filming. They could not reveal any information on an official release date, however. The producers went on to say they're considering releasing a 4K box set for viewers. If the idea does come to fruition, they're hoping to made those box sets worthwhile, with additional material and a possible remastering.

While there are few details about the series finale of The Expanse, it is satisfying to hear those closest to the project confirm it will indeed be a big one. It is always bittersweet when a beloved series is on its way out, but six seasons was always the plan for The Expanse. This is a show that had seen cancellation and revival, so it only seems right for it to go out in a huge way. Of course, viewers will have to wait an undetermined amount of time to see this big finale, but that leaves plenty of time to catch up, rewatch, and theorize about what is to come in final season of the series. There is plenty to look forward to in the new episodes, like answers to the questions that season 5 presented, character fates, and even some new villains to deal with once The Expanse returns.
