Amazon Prime's The Expanse season 6 has set a premiere date for its final season this December. The series, which is adapted from the novels by James S.A. Corey, follows the warship Rocinante and its crew. When they uncover an alien technology that threatens humanity, they must protect the fragile peace that exists between Earth and the colonies on Mars and the asteroid belt. The first three seasons of the series ran on the SyFy network. When SyFy canceled The Expanse in 2018, Amazon Studios resurrected the show for a further three seasons.

At the end of season 5, it was hinted that an evil Empire was being constructed by a ship fueled with Protomolecules. Cortazar's message in the finale being sent from Laconia implies that the final season will be following the story of the sixth novel. There are currently 8 novels in the series with a ninth forthcoming this November, leaving plenty of room for The Expanse to set the stage for potential spinoffs, even though this current series is ending.

Today at New York Comic Con's Metaverse live stream event, the panel for The Expanse included the announcement that a release date has been set for the upcoming final season. The first episode of the new season will drop on December 10, 2021. The series will then air its remaining 5 episodes on consecutive Fridays running through January 14, 2022.

Shohreh Aghdashloo as Chrisjen Avasarala on The Expanse Season 6

Season 6 of The Expanse will follow the war in the solar system as Marco Inaros and the Free Navy attack Earth and Mars with asteroids. Drummer and her family are on the run from Marco while Chrisjen Avasarala sends Bobbie Draper on a mission with the potential to change everything. Things will not get any easier, unfortunately, as a new power begins to emerge on a planet beyond the Rings. The new season will feature returning cast members Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Cara Gee, Frankie Adams, Keon Alexander, Nadine Nicole, and Jasai Chase Owens.

The Expanse will certainly be missed by its following. This final season still has a lot of questions to answer, and hopefully the team can deliver a smashing sendoff to these characters despite having fewer episodes than any of the previous seasons. However, the fact remains that thanks to Amazon, the series had twice as many seasons as it might have otherwise, allowing it the opportunity to complete the story of the first six novels, which all take place before book 7's 30-year time jump.
