The Expanse has almost finished its fifth season, and author Daniel Abraham says fans should be pleased with the impending finale and how it addresses some recent complaints. Season 5 is the popular sci-fi saga’s second at Amazon and its second-to-last. The show is based on the series of novels from Abraham and co-author Ty Franck, who write together under the moniker James S. A. Corey. The season 5 finale will air on Amazon on February 3.

Overall, The Expanse season 5 has received high praise, in line with the acclaim the series has garnered throughout its whole run. The show hit some rough waters leading up to the season 5 premiere after Cas Anvar, one of the primary cast members, was publicly accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women in the summer of 2020. Though season 5 had already wrapped production, it was announced that Anvar would not be returning as Alex for the sixth and final season. Since the series came back on the air, fans and critics have been happy with the result, with only a few criticisms leveled that season 5 has struggled occasionally to balance the show’s numerous plotlines.

Daniel Abraham has now assured fans that those complaints will be addressed in the season 5 finale. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Abraham discussed the season thus far, the show at large, and what’s to come. In response to the critiques that some storylines have been lost in the shuffle, Abraham said viewers should be pleased with how season 5 wraps things up.

EXCLUSIVE: “I'm really looking forward to people seeing Episode 10 and seeing where we land this. There's been a lot of criticism and concern about some things, and some plotlines in the balance - but I know what happens in the next hour. There's gonna be some things where fans were like, ‘Well, whatever happened to...?’ And there it is.”

The Expanse’s diverse ensemble cast has always been one of its strengths. This many characters and storylines are tough to juggle, but The Expanse has done an admirable job keeping all the pieces in the air. The range of character arcs and powerful thematic narratives helped the show accrue its dedicated fan base in its first three seasons. Without that fan base, it may never have been revived on Amazon.

The knowledge that the series will end after season 6 is sad for The Expanse’s loyal viewers, but it hopefully will set the stage for a satisfying climax. Many shows produce their final seasons before being officially canceled, leading to unfinished arcs and understandable frustration from fans. Now that The Expanse can write and film season 6 with the end in mind, it has better potential to end on a truly high note. The Expanse season 5 airs its final episode on Amazon on February 3.
