Shudder announces it has ordered season 2 of The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs. The streaming service dedicated to all things horror has been working with the “world’s foremost drive-in movie critic” since 2018 when they delivered a 24-hour marathon that was intended to be the iconic presenter’s television swan song. The team-up proved too popular to be an actual farewell, however, as it was followed by a pair of holiday-themed horror specials, Dinners of Death, celebrating Thanksgiving, and A Very Joe Bob Christmas a month later.
The series itself premiered this past March, offering Briggs's unique and often hilarious observations into a wide variety of classic and contemporary horror movies, like C.H.U.D., Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, WolfCop, House of the Devil, and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Like the Ben Mankiewicz of eclectic horror films, Briggs announces the films and breaks in from time to time to provide additional insights and conduct interviews. Briggs’s comedic persona is as memorable as many of the films he presents, offering a clever, countryfied understanding of horror, exploitation, and other films.
In a Screen Rant exclusive, Shudder announces The Last Drive-In will continue into season 2. The news comes a day before the season 1 finale, which will be available to subscribers starting Friday, May 24 at 9pm ET/6pm PT. In addition to Shudder General Manager Craig Engler stating the service has heard its subscribers when they say, “we can never have too much Joe Bob,” Briggs himself offered the following:
“It hasn’t even been a full year since the 24-hour Last Drive-In marathon, but since then I’ve made thousands of new friends and reconnected with thousands of old ones. The main reason I’m coming back to do another season is that this community of horror fans is greater than the sum of its parts, and it’s about something larger than horror. Don’t ask me what that thing is, but it’s a source of great joy to me.”
The news will likely be welcome for horror fans and Shudder subscribers as the horror streamer continues to build its catalog of original content. The Last Drive-In is a rare example of a streamer finding success with a weekly series, as opposed to an all-at-once binge-watch, turning Friday nights into appointment television with a beloved TV personality. Briggs has been covering the horror genre for decades now, and it seems fitting that he's found a new home with a streaming service dedicated to the genre of his choice.
