Warning! Contains spoilers for Frontiersman and preview pages for Frontiersman: Lock-Up Special!

Screen Rant has an exciting new preview for Image Comics' upcoming Frontiersman: Lock-Up Special. Following a powerful miniseries, no time is being wasted returning readers back to a world of violence, drama, and humor. Straight from the horse's mouth, writer Patrick Kindlon shared an exclusive look at the one-shot's unlettered art, as well as a few select words about the story.

The new comic follows up on the recent Frontiersman miniseries which just finished its five-issue run in January. The story follows the titular Frontiersman, a retired eco-friendly superhero who is pulled away from his R&R at the behest of an environmental group. Drawn back into his old life, he finds himself reconnecting with his past, as well as dealing with new and old enemies. The initial series promised "Classic Green Arrow-style adventure" with "the thoughtfulness of Concrete" and it looks like readers can expect more of the same in his latest romp.

Frontiersman: Lock-Up Special follows up on the first several issues with the environmentally conscious Frontiersman imprisoned. All doesn't seem lost, however, as the hero seems to have friends on the outside ready to help free him. See for yourself in the exclusive images provided to Screen Rant, as well as the solicitation of the series.

FRONTIERSMAN: LOCKUP SPECIAL (ONE-SHOT)

WRITER: PATRICK KINDLON

ARTIST / COVER: NICOLÒ ASSIRELLI

MAY 4 / 48 PAGES SELF-COVER / FC / M / $5.99

Following the big action of the regular FRONTIERSMAN series, our hero now faces the consequences! When Frontiersman is thrown in the county jail to await trial, he’s visited by an antihero who wants to free him—whether Frontiersman likes it or not! Featuring all-star guest artist NICOLÒ ASSIRELLI! This is a standalone DOUBLE-LENGTH superhero extravaganza for established fans and new readers alike!

The revealed art and information for the one-shot seems to emphasize the jailbreak aspect, as well as the lengths this antihero is willing to go to in order to free the Frontiersman. Series' writer Patrick Kindlon clarifies, telling Screen Rant:

"Ever have a friend who wants to help you out, but you didn't ask for help or even want it? Frontiersman has friends like that, and one pays him a visit while he's in the county jail. Incarceration is so profoundly scary that I think it always works as a setting. Any genre. Put the characters in prison and the stakes rise. This one-shot is a continuation of Frontiersman's larger story, but the issue is fully self-contained. Tight, fun, superhero material for smart readers."

The one-shot comic seems to be both a good follow-up for fans of Frontiersman, as well as the perfect jumping on point for new and interested readers. Time will only tell if Image Comics' latest hero is destined to be a free man or the victim of a jailbreak gone terribly wrong. Be sure to check out Frontiersman: Lock-Up Special when it becomes available on May 4, 2022.
