The X-Men relaunch changed everything about the mutant way of life in the Marvel Universe, but in the pages Excalibur, a whole other world of family drama has been unfolding. And it's the Braddocks at the center of it all.

The launch of the new Excalibur hinged greatly upon the emergence of the new Captain Britain, Betsy Braddock. Taking over the role for her brother Brian, Betsy was forced to watch as her brother was corrupted and possessed by Morgan Le Fay. What followed was an adventure of deception, magic, war, and finally, victory. Ever one to plan out strategies ten moves ahead, the mutant Apocalypse forged a bargain with Morgan. She would be allowed to live in exile, Brian Braddock would be free to leave her control, and Jamie Braddock would be awarded the throne of Avalon (practically their birthright as Braddocks). But as the team rebounds in Marvel's official preview of Excalibur #7, it's clear that King Jamie is as likely to cause the next crisis as he is to prevent it.

While Brian Braddock may have been freed from Morgan's spell, the previous issue ended on a tragic note. For those unfamiliar, the role of Captain Britain is determined through a sacred ritual enacted by Merlin and his daughter, Roma. Arriving in a vision to Brian when he was near-death, the pair presented him with a choice: choose the Amulet of Right (and life), or the Sword of Might (and death). Brian chose the amulet, proving his character, and passing it to Betsy when she became the new Captain Britain. But when the pair appeared to him following his corruption by Morgan, he felt only anger, rage, and fear... and chose the sword instead.

A sword he begged Betsy to destroy, lest he transform into a violent, more fearsome version of Britain's protector. But even if Betsy is willing to hide the Sword of Might from the world, and attempt to make peace with her brother Jamie for the sake of the Braddock bloodline's next chapter, things have never seemed less certain. The next twist in this story could have massive complications for Avalon, Otherworld, and magic in Marvel's Universe as a whole.
