Loosely based on Temptation Island, The British reality dating series Ex on the Beach finally ended its 10-season run in April of 2020, paving the way for the American version to take over on MTV. Beginning in 2014, the original show lasted 97 episodes and spanned multiple countries including Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Thailand, Greece, and Indonesia.
Judging by IMDb voters, who have yet to register a single vote for Season 8 of the show (hence its exclusion), Ex on the Beach started and ended with a bit of a whimper before finding a sweet spot in the midseasons of the series.
Season 9 - 4.4/10
Filmed at the lavish Playaakun villa resort in Tulum, Mexico, season 9 of the show is by far the lowest-rated of the series. The male contestants include Aaron Gill, Bobby Ballard, Josiah Miller, and Zayn London, and the females include Alicia Braden, Daisy Robins, Natalee Harris, and Rhianne Saxby.
The biggest drama of the season came when Zayn's vengeful ex Dominka arrived, followed by Rhianne sending Zayn home after obtaining power from the Tablet of Terror.
Season 10 - 5.3/10
Technically the 11th season after the 10th was canceled due to the death of a cast member, the final season of Ex on the Beach returned to Marbella, Spain where the series began. With 15 episodes and a 90-minute premiere special, it's the longest season of the show.
Dubbed Celebrity Ex on the Beach, the famous contestants included Love Island's Michael Griffiths, The Only Way Is Essex star Joey Essex, Olympic star Ashley McKenzie, TV personality Calum Best, Mob Wives' Marissa Jade, and The Valleys' Lateysha Grace.
Season 1 - 5.3/10
The inaugural season of Ex on the Beach is tied for the second-lowest-rated in series history, per IMDb. Set in the Costa del Sol region of Marbella, Spain, the cast included Geordie Shore star, Vicky Pattison, her ex-boyfriend Dan Conn, and former fiancé Ricci Guarnaccio.
The highest-rated episode of the season came in week 6 when Shelby Billingham arrived and caused a stir with both of her exes, Joss and Ross. In the season finale, Ashley was evicted from the house for his hostile attitude.
Season 4 - 5.4/10
Filmed on the sunny coast of Portugal, Season 4 marked the series return of Megan McKenna and Jordan Davies, this time as exes rather than secondary contestants (which they were in Season 3). Other participants included Geordie Shore star Scotty T, and Judge Geordie star Lewis Good.
According to IMDb, the high mark of the season came in week 2 when Olivia was blindsided by the arrival of her ex, James Moore, who caused all sorts of mayhem inside the villa. Another memorable moment came when James' ex Kristina arrived during his date with Ashley.
Season 3 - 5.4/10
With an increase from 8 to 10 episodes, Season 3 of Ex on the Beach also marked the first time show was filmed away from Europe. Filmed in Cancun, Mexico, the highest-rated episode came in the penultimate week with the arrival of Connie Wiltshire, Stephen's ex-girlfriend and Megan's ex-best-friend.
Season 3 also marked the first time the Tablet of Terror allowed players to evict a housemate, as well as the first time a same-sex ex arrived at the beach to shake things up.
Season 7 - 5.6/10
Filmed in beautiful Bali, Indonesia, Season 7 featured former Love Island winner Max Morley, Beauty School Cop Outs star Savannah Kemplay, and six other original cast members. Nearly every episode of the season was given a 5.6 rating by IMDb.
One of the most memorable dynamics of the season included the arrival of Leonie McSorley, who was not visited by her ex. However, Leonie's twin sister Che arrived, who happened to be the ex of Josh. Even wilder, Josh's other ex Georgia arrived in the third episode.
Season 5 - 5.7/10
In the first time moving production to Asia, Season 5 of Ex on the Beach was filmed in Koh Samui, Thailand. The season was billed as the first "All-Stars" season of the show and brought back eight contestants who competed in the past but still had unfinished business.
Contestants returning to the island included Chole Goodman, Jess Impiazi, Liam Lewis, Jemma Lucy, Jordan Davies, Gaz Beadle, Olivia Walsh, and Stephen Bear. The season finale was the most beloved, per IMDb, due to the arrival of Kayleigh and Olivia's ex and season 1 contestant, Joss Mooney.
Season 2 - 6.0/10
In the second consecutive season filmed in Marbella, Spain, Season 2 saw a marked hike in IMDb ratings. Fans particularly enjoyed the finale when Season 1 star Ashley Cain returned to the beach as the surprising ex of Emily.
Another high point came in episode 2 when Rogan's ex Jess Impiazi arrived and instantly dashed his budding romance with Anita, both of whom were then added to each other's litany of exes. In 2018, Jess went on to star in Celebrity Big Brother during Season 21.
Season 6 - 6.5/10
The sixth season filmed on the Greek island of Crete is the highest-rated Ex on the Beach series, according to IMDb. Among the famous contestants include Love Island's Josh Ritchie, The Only Way is Essex's Nicole Bass, and Geordie Shore's Aaron Chalmers.
Things took a turn for the worse when Alex's ex Alice arrived with zero warning before Josh used his Tablet of Terror powers to kick Alex out of the villa. However, the household dynamic reaches a fever pitch when Sean leaves ZaraLena to be with Zahida, causing a major emotional flare-up.
