In preparation for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Ewan McGregor donned his old Jedi robes on the set of The Mandalorian. Originally thought to be a film, Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars spin-off is set to take place between the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope (8 years after George Lucas’ prequel trilogy). It will see McGregor reprise his role as the legendary Jedi Master and presumably explore his time as “Ben Kenobi” on Tatooine.

After Anakin Skywalker’s turn to the dark side in Episode III, Obi-Wan takes Luke Skywalker to his family on Tatooine. Anakin and Padmé’s daughter, Leia, is adopted by Senator Bail Organa and taken to Alderaan. Not only are characters like a young Luke and Leia rumored to be appearing in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but Hayden Christensen is also rumored to be reprising his role as Anakin. Pre-production for the untitled show is well underway, and it’s currently scheduled to begin filming in March 2021.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused! podcast, McGregor revealed that he’s already donned his familiar Jedi robes. These in-costume camera tests took place on the set of Disney+’s The Mandalorian with director Deborah Chow. Chow will helm the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which will adapt the Volume LED technology used to film The Mandalorian.

"I walked into the dressing room. There were my beige cloaks and my belts and boots...It was my old costume. It was amazing!" Said McGregor. “I'm very excited- I really am very excited about it... We've been talking about doing (the series) for four, five, maybe more years... I'm excited about the fact that it's a series as opposed to a movie. It gives us more space. And I'm mainly excited because of The Mandalorian series which I thought was really good.”

Chow was not involved with the production of season 2. That said, McGregor’s camera tests probably happened during the filming of The Mandalorian’s first season. Regardless, McGregor hasn’t worn Jedi robes in about 15 years (since filming Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith), so it makes sense that he would be excited to see his “old costume.” It’s interesting that he apparently tested in the same Obi-Wan costume from Episode III. The robes Obi-Wan wears on Tatooine will likely be different, or at least resemble Alec Guinness’ outfit from Star Wars: A New Hope.

McGregor could be wearing his “old costume” to film flashbacks to The Clone Wars with Christensen as Obi-Wan laments Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader. Putting McGregor’s acting chops front and center, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series should feature an Obi-Wan tormented by his failure as a mentor and friend. For many, McGregor was one of the best (and underutilized) things about the prequels. Imagining him in beige clocks, wielding a blue lightsaber once again is moving, even if we have to wait until 2022 to see the Disney+ series.
