3. Spooks And Creeps (2004)
Spooks And Creeps is an anthology of horror-themed shorts, but despite plastering Ewan McGregor and Alice Cooper on the front cover, both only appear briefly. McGregor's short is the dialogue-free "Desserts," where his character strolls along an empty beach to discover a tasty eclair has been left on a plate. "Desserts" is the definition of a short but it has a memorable, blacky comic ending and is Spooks And Creeps highlight. Sadly, the other films are a mixed bag, and while Timothy Olyphant's - who hated making 2007's Hitman - "Doppelganger" is also intriguing, overall it's a skippable compilation.
2. Nightwatch (1997)
On the surface, Nightwatch seems like a lost gem. In addition to being a rare Ewan McGregor horror movie, it co-stars actors like Josh Brolin, Patricia Arquette and Nick Nolte, and is a remake of an acclaimed Danish thriller that gave Nikolaj Coster-Waldau one of his first big roles. However, while Nightwatch has bags of atmosphere and a few solid scares, it's often too silly for its own good. McGregor himself has mixed feelings about the final product, and blamed producer Harvey Weinstein for forcing reshoots that gradually made the movie blander and watering down the intensity.
1. Doctor Sleep (2019)
Ewan McGregor's Doctor Sleep is something of a minor miracle. It managed to merge Stephen King's The Shining novel together with Stanley Kubrick's movie adaptation - which the author famously hated - while making an emotionally resonant sequel. McGregor is great as the grown-up Danny Torrance, but the MVP is Rebecca Ferguson as villain Rose the Hat. It also features some visceral scenes of horror - including a harrowing child murder - and even with the healthy runtime, it rarely sags. Oddly, what should be the highlight - the climactic return to the abandoned Overlook Hotel - might be Doctor Sleep's weakest section, as it indulges in fan service and easter eggs a little too much.
