The world of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet features a host of new pocket monsters that players can capture and train, including the Normal-type Lechonk in the early stages of adventure. Found in the East and South Provinces of Area 1, Lechonk makes a quick addition to any player's team, similar to past Normal-type encounters from previous titles such as Bidoof or Rattata. However, there are unique aspects of its evolution that depend on the gender of the Pokémon, which affects the innate Ability used by Lechonk's upgraded form.
Despite there being differences in Ability depending on the gender of Lechonk, both types evolve into Oinkologne at level 18 through training. Players looking to acheive this evolution quickly have plenty of room for training on Pokémon in the surrounding Area 1 where they may have run into Lechonk first. This region unlocks soon after players select their starter in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, featuring rival trainers that could also be a great source of XP for a captured Lechonk, leveling the Pokémon up considerably to reach this progression. Although players will find a host of new Pokémon throughout this title, Lechonk remains an excellent team member for the early stages of the game through this evolution, learning useful moves such as Dig at Level 17 right before becoming Oinkologne.
Evolving Lechonk into Oinkologne in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
The type of Oinkologne players receive after bolstering Lechonk's level to 18 depends entirely on whether Lechonk was male or female. Although the game does indicate this information to the player through Lechonk, Oinkolognes have visual differences distinguishing them from each other, with males having larger ears that cover their eyes and a darker hide. Females have a frayed tail, smaller ears, and a brighter face color that creates a completely separate edition to Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's total amount of creatures. Neither version of Oinkologne gains an additional typing, remaining a pure Normal-type regardless of gender.
The primary difference besides perceptible variations is tied to the Ability a male or female Oinkologne has. The Hidden Ability for both Lechonk and its evolution remains Thick Fat, which reduces damage taken from Fire-and Ice-type moves by 50%, but many players will have a hard time discovering this ability without directly spending a lot of time hunting for it. A male Oinkologne has the Abilities Gluttony and Lingering Aroma, which activates held Berries earlier when their health drops below 50% or changes an opposing Pokémon's Ability to Lingering Aroma on physical contact respectfully. Likewise, the female form of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Lechonk evolution has Aroma Veil instead of Lingering Aroma, which protects the creature from attacks that would block it from using certain moves. Trainers looking to evolve Lechonk in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a decision to make for which of these Abilities would be more useful on their team.
