CBS renews Evil for season 2. The supernatural drama, created by Robert and Michelle King, is among several shows to receive good news from the Eye Network. Evil premiered in September. The first season, consisting of 13 episodes, has followed Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) and David Acosta (Mike Colter).
Bouchard is a forensic psychologist, hired by Acosta to help root out the differences between legitimate instances of demonic possession and insanity. Bouchard is not religious, though she finds her skepticism and her certainty tested as she encounters things she can’t rationalize simply by relying on her usual methods. Acosta is a former journalist that’s studying to be a priest. He works as an assessor, tasked with confirming whether or not incidents have any faith-based explanations. The cast is rounded out by familiar faces to audiences, including Asif Mandvi, Kurt Fuller, Christine Lathi, and Michael Emerson.
According to TVLine, CBS has decided to invest in Evil for another season. The show began with 4.6 million viewers and the ratings have since held steady. Most reviews of the series, which brings a unique framing to what might otherwise be a procedural, have been positive. With four episodes aired, Evil has been praised for its ability to hint at the deeper questions that the spiritual premise invites. As the series continues, and if it continues to be successful, it’s possible that more serialization will be introduced.
Evil is populated by veterans of the small screen. Katja Herbes has starred in Westworld and The Leftovers. Mike Colter is known to many for his portrayal of Luke Cage. Asif Mandvi is a former correspondent for The Daily Show. Behind the camera, the Kings have created The Good Wife as well as its spinoff, The Good Fight, which airs on CBS All Access. The writing duo have said that, with Evil, their aim is to acknowledge the strangeness which exists in both the scientific and religious realms.
CBS also handed out full season orders to All Rise, Bob Hearts Abishola, Carol’s Second Act and The Unicorn. Among the four, All Rise and The Unicorn has received strongly favorable buzz. All Rise is a legal drama, tackling developments in a Los Angeles courtrooms. The Unicorn, meanwhile, is a critically-acclaimed comedy about a recently widowed father. It’s still early in the TV season, with holiday hiatuses kicking in fairly soon. But, with Evil leading the pack, CBS is off to a confident start.
