Executive Producer Bruce Campbell comments on the tone of Evil Dead Rise, revealing that it's closer to the 2013 reboot than to the iconic Sam Raimi original film in which he starred as Ash Williams. After Raimi's three original films, ending with Army of Darkness in 1992, the franchise was rebooted by director Fede Álvarez, earning mixed-to-positive reviews from audiences and critics. Now, director Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise is set to take the scares out of the woods and into a cramped Los Angeles apartment complex.

As the Evil Dead Rise release date approaches, Campbell reveals in an interview with Bloody Disgusting that the upcoming film will actually be darker and more serious in tone, not unlike the 2013 remake. While the original trilogy may have been over-the-top and somewhat campy with plenty of quips from Ash, it doesn't sound like Cronin's upcoming franchise installment has taken this same approach. Check out Campbell's full comment below:

“Both filmmakers are equally capable individuals, so they both really just spanked it. It’s not a yuk-fest. It’s not hardy-har-har. It’s not Ash shooting finger guns. This is real shit going down. These guys took it real seriously. Lee Cronin is Irish, and he brings kind of a European feel to this thing.”

What To Expect From Evil Dead Rise

Interestingly, while Campbell suggests Evil Dead Rise will be close to its predecessor in tone, the two movies won't actually be very closely related otherwise. It was confirmed in 2021 that the upcoming franchise entry will actually serve more as a continuation of Raimi's original trilogy rather than building off of the 2013 reboot. That being said, Evil Dead Rise is making some major changes to franchise tradition in other areas.

Evil Dead Rise follows two estranged sisters who find their reunion thwarted by the arrival of flesh-eating demons, with trailers highlighting a drastic change in location. While the franchise is renowned for its "cabin in the woods" setting, the upcoming film will trade the spooky forest atmosphere for a cramped and claustrophobic apartment building. The first Evil Dead Rise trailer makes clear that although the setting may be changing, the franchise will still retain a similar level of graphic, shocking violence.

Like the 2013 reboot, Williams and other original characters will also not be returning for Evil Dead Rise. The film features an entirely new cast, including Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Gabriella Echols, and Jayden Daniels, among others. Fortunately, audiences don't have much longer to wait to experience Evil Dead Rise for themselves, with the film now just over a month away from releasing.
