'Evil Dead' Remake: Casting Update & First Set Photo [Updated]

Evil Dead Remake to be Realistic and Unbelievably Violent

A Sam Raimi-approved Evil Dead remake is coming, whether fans like it or not. This particular recycling of a beloved cult classic is very much embracing Hollywood's "darker and grittier" remake creed, by abandoning the mix of over-the-top gore and Three Stooges-style comedy from Raimi's original film(s), in favor of a dead-serious supernatural horror flick, with Ichi the Killer levels of violence.

Today, we have news about the film's male lead role (who is not Ash) being filled, along with a "set photo" released by the new Evil Dead's director, Fede Alvarez, which shows off "the path to hell" in the movie.

Variety has the scoop on Shiloh Fernandez landing the male lead role in the new Evil Dead. He'll be playing the part of David, a young man who attempts to wean his sister Mia (a part recently vacated by Lily Collins) off her drug habit, in the aftermath of their mother's death. David assembles a team of friends to accompany him and Mia on an intervention retreat, at an old cabin in the woods. Once there, everything seems to be going according to plan - that is, until one of David's pals starts messing around with the Necronomicon (a.k.a. the Book of the Dead)...

The 26 year-old Fernandez has previously worked brief stints on TV shows such as Three Rivers, United States of Tara, and Jericho, while his previous film roles include parts in flicks like Skateland and (most recently) Red Riding Hood. In other words, he's exactly the sort of little-known, "pretty" young thespian you would expect to headline the Evil Dead remake. Rest assured, he won't be the only cast member who fits that description.

UPDATE: Sure enough, Deadline says that 22 year-old TV actress Jane Levy (Shameless, Suburgatory) is now in talks for the role of Mia.

Alvarez' earlier script draft for the Evil Dead remake has been given a rewrite by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, whose previous writing venture into the realm of supernatural horror (Jennifer's Body) didn't turn out so hot. All the same, that doesn't mean the Cody hasn't learned from her mistakes and done better work on this new dark flick. Her solid work as creator of United States of Tara and on the Young Adult screenplay is proof enough that the new Evil Dead isn't doomed to become "Juno-fied," just because Cody is involved.

Similarly, as widely-disliked the very notion of someone other than Raimi being in charge of any movie titled Evil Dead is, Alvarez made a splash with his short film "Panic Attack!", so there is some good (albeit, untested) fresh talent holding the directorial reins on this flick. If nothing else, this remake should be worlds apart from Raimi's original shoestring-budgeted work... though, that's part of the problem for many ED fans, who would be genuinely more positive about this project, if it were retitled. Moving on...

Alvarez posted the following "set image" on his Twitter account, revealing the unfriendly (and unpaved) road that will lead to the infamous cabin in the woods in the Evil Dead remake:

If this pic seems somewhat reminiscent of the forestry in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, well, there's a good reason. The Evil Dead remake is likewise being shot in New Zealand - specifically, in the same region that was used in the Yogi Bear movie. Make of that what you will.

Evil Dead is slated to begin production by March 2012, with an April 12th, 2013 U.S. theatrical release date in mind.
