The cult classic Evil Dead 2 from the Evil Dead franchise is now returning in the form of a virtual escape room in May that will scare people senseless. Since 1981, Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams has been battling deadites. The original Evil Dead led to two more films, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and years later, even a TV series titled Ash vs. Evil Dead. Evil Dead 2 is where Ash and his girlfriend Linda travel to the Knowby Cabin, and after listening to a tape of archaeologist Raymond Knowby reciting passages from the Book of the Dead (Necronomicon Ex-Mortis), an evil force is unleashed. This particular installment is known for introducing Ash’s popular saying “groovy,” and when the chainsaw first becomes attached to where Ash’s right hand used to be. Now Evil Dead 2 is coming back, this time for people in a live escape room.

Announced by Hourglass Escapes, participants in the Evil Dead 2 virtual Escape Room will have “70 minutes to return The Evil Dead to their realm and save your soul!” Tickets go on sale May 8. Hourglass stated that the game will be online and use the Zoom meeting technology. The article also notes that it is “like a first-person video game but with live people, and it is designed for a 3 to 6 player group.” Hourglass also states that each player will have a character “of a member of the paranormal group “Gnostic Research of the Occult, Omens, Vampires, and Yetis” aka G.R.O.O.V.Y.”

The game sounds like a great idea in many ways. Despite Campbell’s retirement as Ash and fans having to wait for a potential new Evil Dead film, this game is providing a new experience for fans of the franchise and giving people an alternative style of game during this quarantine period. It’s also a fun and potentially horrifying way to interact with friends and family that people cannot meet right now. Also, for fans of Evil Dead, they likely will get a big kick out of the references like “G.R.O.O.V.Y,” and having the game take place in Evil Dead 2’s Knowby Cabin. As long as people have a steady WIFI, Evil Dead 2 Escape Room sounds like a good idea.
