Jamie Lee Curtis has taken to Instagram to reveal the inspiration behind her latest character in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Written and directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the film stars Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who suddenly learns about the existence of the multiverse. Evelyn is then given the technology to access her parallel lives, in which her alternate counterparts made different life choices. Currently sitting at a 96% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the offbeat sci-fi comedy is being widely praised for its delightful absurdity and emotional story. Throughout the film Curtis plays Deirdre Beaubeirdra, an IRS Inspector who is tasked with auditing Wang’s Chinese laundromat on the same day that her family is preparing for a Chinese New Year celebration.
Recently taking to Instagram, Curtis has explained that drew upon another of her previous characters to inspire her IRS agent. Curtis says her latest character is based on her previous role of Elaine Bowen, the alcoholic older wife of Ben Affleck’s character in the 2001 comedy Daddy and Them, directed by Billy Bob Thornton. The actor explained in her post that Elaine served as “the visual inspiration” for Deirdre, which she then took to directors Kwan and Scheinert and the rest of the film’s creative team. With an enormous career filled with some truly memorable characters, it is understandable that Curtis is able to dip into her previous repertoire for inspiration when seeking to create an entirely new character. With her wealth of screen experience, no doubt this is a practice that has most likely served her well in the past and will continue to do so again in the future. Fans of Jamie Lee Curtis will be able to see her bring her latest creation to life right now, as Everything Everywhere All At Once is currently showing in theaters.
